WILLIAM MADDEN DEACON, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
GARTER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 653,220, dated July 10,1900.
Application filed septemher 6, 1899. Serial No. 729,658. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -WILLIAM MADDEN DEA- CON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mens Garters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in mens garters; and it has for its object to provide a garter which will hold the stocking up equally all around.
My invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved garter, and Fig. 2 is a similar View as seen from the opposite side.
The garter is composed of two sections of elastic webbing A and A of approximatelyequal length and each preferably doubled and provided with a sliding buckle 0. or a for adjusting the normal circumference of the garter. These two elastic sections A and A are permanently connected by means of a preferably non-elastic cord B,which is inclosed within the loop aiformed by the doubling of the one section, as A, and similarly inclosed within a loop, such as of, formed by doubling over a short portion of one adjacent end of the other section A and securing the same by stitches, as shown, or the loop a may be otherwise suitably formed. The ends of the cord B are connected to a clasp B for engagement with the stocking. A second non-elastic cord 0 is inclosed Within the loop or, formed by the doubling of the section A, and this cord, which is preferably of the same length as the cord B, has its end united and connected to aclasp 0.
Except for the adjustment allowed by reason of the sliding buckles a and a, the parts as described have a fixed relation; but for attaching and detaching the garter upon the leg of the person a hook D, secured within a loop a in one end of the section A and arranged to engage the cord 0, and thus connect or disconnect the cord O and the section A, is provided.
By having the suspension-cords B and C between the two sections of webbing it will be seen that the two points of support for the stocking will be opposite and that avery advantageous effect will be produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- In a garter of the character described, the combination of the looped elastic sections A and A; the looped cord B inclosed within the loops a and a of said sections respectively and non-detachably connecting said sections; the clasp B connected to and uniting the ends of said cord; looped cord 0 inclosed within the loop a at the opposite end of one section A 5 the hook 'D non-detachably attached to the opposite end of the other section A and adapted to detachably engage said cord 0; and the clasp 0 connected to and uniting the ends of said looped cord 0, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM MADDEN DEAOON.
