IMPROVEMENT IN METAL CANS AND BOXES FOR PAINTS AND OTHER MATERIALS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FREDERIK W. DVOE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Metal Cans and Boxes for Containing Paint and other Substances.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of va can constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken in the line x :c of fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a detached section on an enlarged scale, of a portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists in the construction ofv a paint or other can with an internal swage formed near the top thereof, and which serves to support a suitable cover, and to enable a snug joint to be formed between the same and the can when the latter is closed. The invention further consists in a novel means whereby the said joint is hermetically sealed; and furthermore, in a novel means whereby the secriieuetention of the cover in its place is eifectually provided for. i o
To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
The sheet-metal body of the can, made preferably of cylindrical form, is marked A in the drawings, and is constructed with an internally-projecting swage, a, formed by circumferentially iudenting the outer side of the saidbody at a short distance fromthe top or upper edge thereof, as shown in fig. 2. The cover i-s shown at B, and may be made of wood, metal, or other suitable material, and is of such size and shape as to ht snugly within the upper end of the body A, above the swage a, and has formed in and laround its lower, edge an annular rebate, IJ, in which is fitted anIndia-rubber ring or gasket, c. Formed at suitable distances apart in the upper edge of this cover B, are any desired number of notches or recesses, @L In closing the can the cover B is inserted in the top of the body A, and is pressed 'down until the gasket c is brought upon the upper side or Vsurface of the swage a, the lower circumferential edge of the aforesaid cover being at the same time brought snugly in contact with the internal circumference of the swage a, in such manner as not only to prevent the contents of the can or box from coming in immediate contact with the gasket e, (which, in many cases, would injure the India rubber of which the said gasket is composed,) but also to act as an internal brace to prevent the sides of the body A from being jammed inward from the outside, which being done, those portions of the top or upper edgeiof the said body opposite the notches or recesses 0l are forced or indented into the aforesaid recesses, as indicated more fully in iig. 2, which, pressing the lever slightly downwards, compresses the gasket between the top of the rebate 6 and the upper side of the swage a, the lateral expansion of the gasket by such compression causing it to press tightly against the inner surface of the body A, thus hermetically sealing the joint between the cover and the body of the can, at the same time that the cover is securely held in place by those portions of the upper Aedge" of the body A which are forced into the .recesses d, as just herein set forth, the said cover being furthermore capable of being easily removed when desired, by simply pressing such portions out of the aforesaid recess by means of a knife or other suitable implement. The said cover may thenbe V used as-a'looso or temporary lid for the can, or may be again secured in place when required, to hermetically close the same, as hereinbefore fully set forth. From the simplicity of its construction and its consequent durability, the cover B may, after having been used with one can or box, be employed with a new one with the same efficiency and convenience as when used in the first instance, as is moreespecially desirable when such cover is made of expensive material, in which case the economy resulting from such repented use would be comparatively considerable.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure -by Letters Patent, ish
1. lhe can, constructed with the internal swage a atthe innerpart thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combinationV of the rebate o of lthe cover B, the internal swage ct' of the body of thc can,'and the gasket c, substantially as and for the purpose specified'.
3. The recesses d in thc `cover B, in combination with the upper' edge of the body A, and the internal swage. a, substantially as and for the purpose specied. l
FRED. W. DEVOE.
