T0 ALL IVI-IGM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it 1Known thnt I, MOSES G. WILDER, et'v West- Meriden, county of 'Iev.r Haven, and State'of Connecticut, have invented certain new und useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Ires'cs, for working metal, die.; and to enable others skilled in the nrt to malte and use the suine, I will proceed to describe hyreferring to the druwings, in which the suine letters indicate like parts in euch of the figures.
The 1in-ture of this invention will be understood from the specification und drawings.
The object desired to he vattained thereby is, to so arrange the mechanism that by simply turning :i spit-:il wheel the upper and lower dies muy be easily and quickly adjusted to their proper relative positions with each other. In the accompanying drowiugs` Figure l is o side elevation of this invention.
Figure 2 is o. detached view of the adjusting device, h v moons of which the relative working position of the dies is regulated.l
A is the stock of the press. B is the bed of the press, in or upon which the dies :ire arranged for use, und to which the stock is united und supported. C is :i socket, which foi-ins part of the stock, in which the shaft D is urrunged, and operates the upper die, much in the usual way. The head A of the stock A is provided with :in opening, in which the lever E is :i1-ranged so :1s to work closely and freely therein. This lever is secured V Within said opening:r upon an eccentric pin, F. The eccentric pin F (see iig. 2) is made in the forni of e, holt, having o. head and nut, for securing it in its proper place. This pin or holt is provided with on eccentric wheel, lui-ger in its diameter than the dituneter of the bolt. Said eccentric is secured on seid bolt by means of a key, af orits equivalent, and in such u position that it muy he easily revolved with the'motion of the pin between the` sides of said opening in the head A. The lever is mounted uponsuid eccentric pin so thatthc centre of its action or movement muy he elevated or depressed hy the relative position of-` seid eccentric G with its piu F: The front end of this lever, E, is provided with u slit or opening (shown hy dotted lines through the shaft D) through which the pin i posses tn connect the lever E with the shaft D. In order to effect :i movement or purtial revolution of the eccentric, u gear, Il, is made or secured on the outer or houd end of the pin F. I isn spindle secured in hearings in the bosses I', (formed on the sides of the heed AQ) in a, rightnngled position with the pin F, or nearly so. Upon this spindle, und between the hossos I, is secured a spiral or wor1n-wheel Jso that it will work into the gear II, to turn the eccentric more or less into :my given or required position, to elevate or depress the centre of the lever E at fulcrum. Thus hy turning the spindle I the wheel J will :1ct upon the geur II and turn the eccentric more or less as muy be required. K isn foot-treadle lever, secured to the freine or stoel: of the machine lay n holt or pin, c. This treadlc is provided with a stop-cutch, d, which strikes against or upon the hess d', thus fixing the extent of its downward motion. When the treadle K is depressed und the sho-ft l) is elevated to their proper resting platee, the length of'the connectingrod .or arm L is ascertained, and is secured hvv bolts or'pins c at or-neztr the ends ot'isziid lever and treudle. The dies are arranged to the shaft D and hed I3 in the usual wey. New, after the dies `have heen properly arranged, and itI is desirable to adjust the action of the upper die with the lower die, it is only necessary, first, to place the foot upon the treudle, ond with one hond turn the spindle I until the action of the eccentric upon the lover sha-ll elevate or depress the dic to produce the desired relative position with euch other, thus saving :i great einount of time :ind irksonic labor, und rendering the inachine more desirable und convenient for use. I hcliere I have thus shown' the nature, construction, and advantage of this improvement, so as to enahlc others skilled to ineke und use the seine therefrom.
I clziiin the combination of the eccentric G, stock A, shaft B, level-E, arranged and operating substantially :is described.
I claim the combination of the eccentric G, .stock A, shaft D, levers E K, arln L, with the wheel Il J, suhstantinlly as and for the purpose described.v
