To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL GRooxETT, of Dexter, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Double-Seaming Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for double-seaming tinware, and has for its object to provide a machine simple in construction and effective in operation, whereby a perfect seam may be made in an expeditious and efficient manner.
The invention consists in the construction and operation of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims. a
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, 111 which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is an elevation of one side of the machine with the parts in operative position. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side of the machine, parts being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
In carrying out theinvention, the frame consists of a standard, A, having an arm, B, integral with'the top and extending out at right angles thereto; and the said standard is also provided upon the side with an outwardlyprojecting horizontal bracket, .00, upon the.
outer end of which bracket, beneath the arm B, a lug, a, is cast, provided with a horizontal aperture, and at the opposite end of the bracket a similar apertured lug, a is formed, partly upon the bracket and partly in the standard, the apertures in the lugs being in alignment.
In the apertures of the lugs a and a a horizontal shaft, 0, is journaled, adapted to extend outward beyond each lug, and provided upon the inner end with a reduced left-hand threaded portion, 0, carrying a nut, c, and at the extreme right-hand threaded end, 0 outside the nut c', with adisk, D, having a central aperture tapped with a right-hand thread,
the purpose of the not 0 being to regulate the distance the disk is to be screwed upon the shaft. The outer end of the shaft 0, or the end projecting beyond the lug a is provided at its extremity with acrank-arm, (2, whereby the shaft is rotated, and between said lug and crank the shaft is further provided with an annular recess or groove, d. The end of the standardarm B is bifurcated, and each member is apertured in vertical alignment. Between the said members a nut, D, is placed, having the front end transversely slotted to intersect the central aperture, and provided with a set-screw, e, passing through the nut and slot at right angles to the latter.
Through the apertures in the bifurcated end of the arm B and through the threaded aperture in the nut D, a screw-shaft, D is projected, provided with a flat thread, the said screw-shaft being vertical and .at right angles to the rotary shaft 0. The upper end of the screw-shaft is made rectangular for the application of a wrench,whereby the said shaft is made to travel up or down through the nut D. Near the lower end a collar, 6, is formed, below which collar the shaft is made to receive an apertured head, E, provided with an integral hub, E, and the head and shaft are held in connection by aset-'screw,e ,passed throughthehub into a groove formed in and around the shaft,
as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The head E incline to the front and reciprocate upon the side of the standard A opposite to that carrying the projection a. The leverH has a metal yoke, h, attached to the forward edge of the upper end,in which a friction-roller,k,pivoted at one end of a horizontal lever, K, is adapted to travel. The said lever K is fulcrumed upon the arm B near its end, and the inner end of the lever is pivoted on a pin, is, integral with the nut D. The lever K is reciprocated from an ordinary foot-treadle through the medium of a connecting-rod, M.
In operation the disk D and the head E are simultaneously brought together or moved apart by the manipulation of the lever K, which lever acts directly upon the shaft carrying the head through the nut D, which is secured to the shaft by the set-screw e, and indirectly upon the disk through the curved lever H. Various sizes of disks and heads may be employed to suit different classes of work. W'hen the seam has been partially formed, interlocked, and placed upon the disk, and the head is brought in contact with the incomplete seam, the two parts of the seam, by turning the crank-arm d, are united as closely as desired, according to the pressure brought to bear upon the two formers.
It will be observed that the machine is easily and quickly set to different size disks, and that it does not necessitate an experienced hand to manipulate it; also, that the heads may be quickly changed, the machine placed for operation upon a table by securing the base of the standard by screws or clamps, and, further, that no spring or other delicate mechanism liable to frequent disarraugement or breakage is employed.
Having thus fully'described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the standard A and attached arm B, ashaft, O, journaled horizontally in said standard, a threaded shaft, D held to slide in said arm at a right angle to the shaft 0, and an interiorly-threaded nut, D, adapted to receive the shaft D", of a disk, D, detachably attached to the shaft 0, and a head, E, provided with an annular peripheral recess, F, dctachably secured to the said shaft D" at right angles to the disk D, and means for simultaneously bringing the said head and disk in contact, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the standard A, the integral arm B, having a bifurcated end, a nut, D, held within said bifurcation, a horizontal shaft, 0, journaled in said standard, provided with a thread at one end and an adjusting-sleeve, 0, upon said thread and a crank at the other, and a vertical threaded shaft held to slide in said arm and secured in said nut, of a detachable disk attached to said shaft 0, a head, E, provided with an annular peripheral recess, f, detachably secured to said threaded shaft, and means for simultaneously bringing said head and disk in contact, substantially as herein specified.
3. The combination, with the standard A, the arm B, having a bifurcated end, a split nut, D, held in said bifurcation, a horizontal shaft, 0, journaled in said standard, provided with a crank, d, annular groove d, and thread a, and the threaded vertical shaft D held by said nut and sliding in said arm, of the disk D, detachably secured to the shaft 0, the recessed head E, detachably attached to the shaft D the curved lever H, resting in the groove of the shaft 0, the horizontal lever K, connected with said lever H and nut D, and means for manipulating said lever K, substantially as herein specified.
4. The combination, with the standard A, the arm B, having a bifurcated end, a split nut, D, held in said bifurcation, a horizontal shaft, 0, journaled in said standard, provided with a crank, d, annular groove (1, and thread 0, and the threaded vertical shaft D", held by said nut and sliding in said arm, of the disk D, detachably secured to said shaft G, the recessed head E, detachably attached to the shaft D the curved lever H, engaging the groove in the shaft 0, provided at. its upper end with a yoke, h, a horizontal lever, K, provided at one end with a friction-roller, in, engaging said yoke and attached to said not D at the other end, and means for manipulating said lever K, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
