' IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE FOR SPINNING- SHEET METAL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. Manor, of Meriden,
in the county of New Haven, and State of Connectiout, have invented a new Improvement in Machine for Spinning Metal; and'I do hereby declare the followingf'when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute partol this specification, and represent in- Figure 1, a top view;

Figure 3, a right-hand end view;
Figure 4, a top view, with the parts in difierentpositions, to illustrate .the operatioii of the invention; and in Figures 5, 6, and 7, detached views.
This invention relates to an improvement in the machine patented to me, April 27, 1S69,-for spinning metal, that is to say,'the working of metal into shape upon a former, by causing the former and .disk to revolve rapidly, and a suitable instrument pressed against the disk to work or draw the metal down onto the former. This is the usual method for spinning, and is employed for the making of hollow vessels and articles of various character.
In my aforesaid patent, the tool is guided by a fixed By my improvement I combine adjustable guides,-

My invention consists in the arrangement in a spinningqnachine of an adjustable guide, whereby the longitudinal movement of the spinning-tool maybe adjusted also, in the arrangement of an adjustable guide, whereby the transverse movement of the tool may be adjusted.
A is the bed of the machine, upon which, in suitable bearings B, a mandrel, B, is placed, and caused to revolve by the application of power thereto through the pulley B, in the usual manner, and to which the former D is fixed, so as to revolve with the said mandrel. The said former is wrought in the shape required for the article to be produced.
(l is'a mandrel having a longitudinal movement, that is, arranged so as to move axially to or from the center of the former so that when the/disk of metal is placed against the tormer it maybe firmly held in position by pressing the mandrel O firmly against it, as in common spinning-machines where the tool is guided by hand, and also as shown in my patent before re t'erred to. y
F is a slide arranged so as to work transversely across the bed in a guide, E, and the said guide E, arranged sons to move longitudinally on the bed of the machine. On the said slide the spinning-toolF is arranged, held in any convenient trimmer, and may be in like manner as the tool ofa slide-rest.
(l is a plate, by preference ofa circular form, ar ranged so as to turn on a table, H, to any desired position around a center.
In order to permit the turning of the plate G upon the table, the plate is constructed upon the under sidias seen in fig. 7, with a circular T-shaped slot, (I, with T-headed bolts cext-e'mlingdown through the table ll. with nuts 11, so that by the loosening of the nuts the plate G may be turned to auydesired position.
On the plate G a slide, 1, is arranged, so as to move freely thereon. From the said slide .1 a rod, 1, extends, aud is pivoted at f to an adjustable arm, I", on the guide I), and is also pivoted at n on the slide 1:].
I will first describe the operation or the slide I, as shown in figs. 1', .2, and 3. To the guide E a longitudinal reciprocating movement isimparted by an ad justable crank-wheel, L, through a lever, If, and rod L, the said crank wheel being turned in the operation by means ot the handle L' or other suitable device. with the plate G set so that the slide I will mow. therein at an angle relatively to the machine, as i; fig. 1, and the movementimparted to the slide E h; the crank, as before described, there will be given t the slide, in combination with such direct reciproczu ing movement, a transverse movementcorrespondin to the angle or path of movement of the slide 1, the: slide I being connected directly to the guide E and also to the slide E, the slide I will be drawn \vith'thc guide E, and, at the same time, by means of the connection n, the slide E will be drawn out, thus imparting to the tool 1* a movement corrcspomling to the incline of the former 1). This movement is denoted by the broken lines, fig. 1.
It \villbe evident that the angle of the movement. of the tool may be adjusted by turning the plate G, and also that the reciprocating movement may be adjusted by means ofthe crank L, the adjust-mentof the crank being the common adjustment.
To change the position of the tool or of the connections, I make the arm I adjustable, as seen in fig. so as to throw the pivot 1' out or in, as the case may be, and also arrange the table upon a slide, 11', so that it may be moved out or in, as the case ma be; and also, as seen in fig. 2, arrange the slide 11', by means of a longitudinal guide, at, so that it may be moved longitudinally on the bed of the machine.

N is a crankavheel, arranged upon a vertical shaft, in a bearing, IS, in the rear of the machine, to which extending through and communicating to the shaft of the crank-wheel N by means of bevel-gears N, as seen in fig. 1. 4
The said crank-wheel is provided with a slot, M, upon its surface, in which a crank-pin, m, is arranged, so as to be adjustable in the said slot in the usuai manner for adjustable crank-pins, and from the said crank-pin a rod, 1, extends forward, and connects to the rod 1, or may be to the slide E, if preferred.
The operation of this arrangement is shown in fig. 4. Supposing it is desired that the tool 1 move across the end or face of the former, say starting from the structed and operating as described.

It should be here remarked, thaltwhen the crank L is attached as first described, the crank N should be detached ,or set, so that the longitudinal movement will not be interfered with, that is, it may be set, as in fig. 1, and the crank will partially rotate by the movement of the slide E.
I claim as my invention--- 1. In combination with the tool-carrying slide E,
the plate G, made adjustable to vary the angle of and carry the slide I, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The plate G, when constructed in two parts, G and G", and arranged with a-spring, '1, between the two, so as to afi'ord a yielding pressure to the tool, substantially as set forth.
