IMPROVEMENT l-N COMBINED PUNCHES AND EDGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,7 10, dated March 19, 1872.

This block has lugs at the side by The lower die of this punch is made of steel, in the form of a hollow tube, of the required size, and set firmly in the base-block, .with the lower end resting on the shoulder or recess in the hole in the block to prevent it from being forced through by the pressure, and has also a small iron ring about three and a half inches in diameter and one-eighth inch thick, fitted loosely over the top of the die, and is there kept in its place by three small pins fastened in the under side. These pins run down through holes in the base-block, with another small pin through the ends to prevent their rising out of place, and in order to hold up the plate in proper position near the top of the die. There is a metal spiral spring placed over each of the pins in the plate, with the lower ends resting on a recess in the holes:in the base-block, which holds up the plate at all times in its place. There is also a small pin, with the head on one side screwed into the block close to the edge of the plate, to answer as a button to hold the plate down out of the way when necessary to adjust the tin under the punch, the object of the plate being to raise the tin from the die after being punched by means of the springs under it; The second part of the invention consists in the punch or upper die, which is also made of steel, with a screw on the upper end by which to fasten it in the press, the lower end being grooved out so as die, where it is finished and forced off the end of the punch by means of the bolt in the end for that purpose, which fits loosely in the punch, and is held in its place and operated by a small lever through the upper end fastened to the outside of the die. This lever may have a weight on the end, or may be operated by the hand, as may be most convenient.
The great advantage which I claim for my invention consists in'the fact that it will cut and edge the tin at one and the same time by the same motion, leaving the bur on the outside, which is a great advantage in putting it together, particularly when used for boxes,
fruit-cans, or other similar purposes; but is equally advantageous when used for other purposes, and will turn out more than double the amount of work in a given time than can be done by any of the ordinary machines now in use, which renders it much preferable to all others on account of the great economy in its use, as any boy of but limited skill can operate it, whereas, with the old style of machine, it requires a skilled workman to use them, and hence must greatly increase the cost of the article produced.
' Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, a more thorough understandin g of it may be had by reference to the drawing.

Having thus fully described the drawing, therefore what I claim as-new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The die and edger I K, formed with the annular groove J, in combination with the bolt L and means N for moving the bolt inde-- pendently of the movable die, and with the stationary hollow die and finisher B, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
2. In combination with the parts mentioned in the preceding clause, I claim the annular plate 0, pins D, springs E, adjustable stop G, and a base, A H, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
