sPEcIFIcATIoN forming part of Letters patent No. 650,954, dated 'June 5,1900.
Applicant sied August 1s, 1899.
To all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH A. SoRIvEN, a citizen of the United States, residinginNew ork, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im= provements in Garments, of which the followY ing is a specification.
My invention relates to bifurcated nether garments, and has for its object to produce a garment specially adaptedfor thense of bicycle-riders. To this end I have shown an nndergarment as of the knee-pantsivariety; but it is obvious that this is but'a preferred form.
In the drawings, Figure l is a rear view of the garment. Fig. 2 is a front View thereof, and Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3of Fig. 1.
In the drawings', ct is the waistband of the garment,- and h the tubular members thereof.
hese portions of the garment are less elastic than the elastic insertion portion hereinafter described. Elastic elongated insertionsd of .knitted fabric having their wales running longitudinally are set upright in the rear of the tubular members. Interpolated between these insertions is a highly-elastic saddlegore or tension member e. This tension member is shown as a separate piece; but its component parts may readily be integral with the insertions d L This tension member or saddle-gore is of a general forked or inverted- Y shape, and consists, as shown in Fig. 3, which is a longitudinal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, of two layers of elastic fabric, preferably knitted fabric, the wales or ribs of one layer running at an angle to the wales or ribs of the other layer and to the longitudinal and lateral lines of the garment, by which I mean sean No. 727,627. or@ man.)
lines extending longitudinally and laterally of the garment,- respectively. It will be understood, however, that one of these layers may be integral with one of the insertions d and the other layer integral with the other insertion d, although the tension member e is preferably made as a separate part. It is generally understood that the greatest strains upon a bifurcated nether garment occur along lines running laterally and longitudinally of the garment, and consequently the Wales of the two layers of the tension member are not only at an angle to each other, but run at an angle to the lines of these two strains, so that a highly-efficient saddlegore is produced. The fork of the saddle-gore embraces the crotch of t-he garment and forms part of the seat.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is-
. A bifurcated nether garment having the tubular members b with the upright elastic insertions'd in the rear thereof having longitudinally-extending wales, and the highly-elastic tension member or saddle-gore e, of a gen' eral inverted-Y shape, the forkof the Y embracing the crotch of the garment and constituting a part of the seat of the'garment, the said saddle-gore being composed of a plurality of layers of elastic fabric, the wales or ribs of each fabric running at an angle to the wales or ribs of the other fabric and to the longitudinal and lateral lines of the garlnent.
