SAMUEL H. CURRIE, OF PORT HURON, MICHIGAN.
EXERCISING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,781, dated. ma 29, 1906. 7 Application filed January 23, 1900. Serial No, 2 487. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL I-I. CURRIE, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Exercising Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to exercising apparatus; and the objects of the same are to provide a device which resembles the ordinary punching-bag in some respects, but which is provided with means for giving more or less weight to the bag to make it adaptable to persons of different strength, the punching-bag being suspended from a swivel attached to a cross-bar in such a manner that the bag may be swung around the cross-bar either in a vertical line or in a substantially-horizontal line at either the right or left side of the vertical line, depending upon the kind of blow delivered by the operator.
Another object of mydevice is to provide an exercising apparatus which will in its use combine amusement with the elements of competitive strength and scientific ability in the delivery of blows taught in the art of boxing.
I attain these objects by means of the construction-shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of my apparatus. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic view showing the difierent positions assumed by the punchingbag when different blows are delivered to it. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a modified form of swivel which I may use. Fig. lis a perspective view of the weight-pocket to be attached to the punching-bag.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts wherever they'occur in the different views.
In said drawings the numerals 1 1 indicate the vertical bars, which may be of wood or iron and provided with suitable means for bracing them in an upright position, such as pointed lower ends 2 2, if intended for outdoor use, said points being designed to be driven into the ground. Double eyebolts 3 3 are attached to the vertical bars, and guywires 4 4: are connected to the eyebolts and to the ground or floor.
The cross-bar 5 is attached at its ends to tlie vertical bars 1 1, and, as shown, this crossbar is provided with eyes 6 6, oneat each end, .and these fit snugly the reduced upper ends 7 7 of the vertical bars and rest upon the shoulders 8 8, formed below said reduced ends 7 7. The ends of the vertical bars and the eyes 6 6 may bescrew-threaded forrigidly attaching the cross-bar to the vertical bars, if desired. The cross-bar 5 has a straight central portion 9, and at opposite sides 0 said arched portion the bar is curved, asat 10 10, for a purpose which will be hereinafter referred to. I
Loosely mounted on the central arched portion of the crossbar 5 is a swivel 11, which may be of the form shown in Fig. 1, consisting of two eyes 12 12, swiveled on the cross bar 5, and the intermediate collar 13, secured to the cross-bar between said eyes to prevent swivel 11 from moving endwise on the bar 5, or said swivel may be formed as shown in Fig. 3, consisting of the eye portion 14., an eye or loop 16, formed on said eye portion, and the two collars 16 16, secured to the crossbar 5 on opposite sides of the swivel to limit its endwise movement on the crossbar.
The punching bag 17 is suspended from the swivel 11 in any suitable manner, and said punching-bag may be of the ordinary construction, with the exception of a feature about to be described. A pocket or receptacle 18is attached to the bag, at the bottom thereof, by the strapslS. This pocket is designed for the purpose of holding weights 19, which may be in the form of shot, which may be inserted in the tube 20. The pocket 18 is formed by two disks, of leather or similar material, stitched together at their outer edges. The straps 18 are attached to the pocket and extend up to a piece of leather 21, designed to fit the top of the punching-bag and having a number of buckles 22 for the straps 18*. It will be understood, of course, that the heavier the weight placed in the pocket or receptacle the more power must be given to the blow to revolve the bag around the cross-bar 5, said bag carrying the swivel 11 with it. Hence the weight may be adjusted to suit different contestants.
The operation of my apparatus may be de= scribed as follows: Two contestants of about equal skill and strength having placed the ICC desired weight in the pocket or receptacle, a time-keeper sounds a gong or calls time for the first round. One of the contestants steps up to the bag and delivers the kind of blows he may desire to the bag. As shown in the diagrammatic view, Fig. 2, the results of the different blows are illustrated. At the left of said figure the bag has assumed the position shown as a result of a right swing. At the right the bag is in the position it takes when a left swing has been delivered to it, and at the center the figure shows the position which the bag assumes when a straight upper-cut has been delivered, it being understood that the bag must always revolve at least once around the cross-bar 5 to make the blow effective or subject to score. The score may be determined by giving one point for the right swing, two points for the left swing, and three points for the straight upper-cut. lVhen time has been called for the end of the round for the first contestant, his opponent responds to the call of time to commence his first round. Then the bout has been finished, consisting of as many rounds as agreed upon, the points are counted and the decision is given to the contestant scoring the largest number of points.
It will be noticed that-the curved portions 10 10 of the crossbar 5 permit the bag to vault the bar in nearly a horizontal plane, and unless the bag is given just the angular impact toclear the bar it may strike the bar and return to the same side and fail to score.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. An exercising apparatus, consisting of vertical bars, a cross-bar, said cross-barhavingan upward curve in the center and a down ward curve at each side thereof, a swivel connected to the central curve, a punching-bag suspended from the swivel, and a pocket on said bag for containing adjusting-weights.
2. In an exercising apparatus, two upright bars connected at the top by a cross-bar, said cross-bar having an upwardly-curved central portion and a downwardly-curved portion at each side thereof, a swivel connected to the central curve, and a punching-bag suspended from said swivel, said bag having a detachable pocket secured thereto, and means for placing adjusting-weights in said pocket, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit- HOS-SOS.
