UNITED STATES PATENT Onrio'nr ZAI'DA B. WEBB, or WHIPPANY, new JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MEsNE AS- SIGNMENTS, TO HENRY S. WASHINGTON, OF LOCUST, AND JOHN S. V. THOMPSON, OF MORBISTOWN, NEW JERSEY;
VFOLD'ING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,625, dated May 29, 1906.
Application filed October 18, 1899. Serial No. 733,946. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern: extensions terminate in tongues 19, the width Be it known that I, ZAIDA B. WEBB, of ofatongue at its middle portion-that is, the lVhippany, in the county of Morris and State part between the lines -corresponding to of New Jersey, have invented certain new and the length of the slots 16. Each tongue 19 has useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of wings 21, which are adapted to fold inward on which the following is a full, clear, and exact the tonguebody, so that the whole may be description. tucked readily through one of the slots 16, at-
My invention relates to improvements in ter which the wings are opened up, as shown foldingboxes of the class which are adapted to in Fig. 2,'to make a secure fastening.
[0 have the blank lie out fiat for shipment or fold The side piece 15 can be provided with an up to form a box; and the object of my invenextension forming the top or cover 23, which tion is to produce a very simple form of foldis separated from the side piece by the scoreing box which cuts to great advantage and line 22 and which has at its free edge a tongue which has an especially strong and convenient 24, the tongue being separated from the top I 5 means for fastening the several parts together. or cover by the score-line 25 and being 'adapt- To this end my invention consists of a folded also to tuck into the box when the latter is ing box constructed substantially as hereinclosed in the usualmanner. The end flaps 17 after described and claimed. are also provided with extension-flaps 26,
- In the drawings, wherein similar figures of. which are separated from the end flaps by the 20 reference designate similar parts, Figure lis score-line 27 and which are free from the a development of the box-blank. Fig. 2 is a cover or top 23, so that when the box is folded perspective view of the box when set up for up these extension-flaps 26 are adapted to fold use, the top or cover being open. Fig. 3 is a inward into the box, as shown in Fig. 2. This broken rear elevation of the box with the top arrangement of flaps 26 and cover 23 is com- 25 or cover open; and Fig. 4 is an end View of mon to many folding boxes and can be used the box, the cover being shown in position to or not with my improved box, as desired. The close down upon the box-body. essential part of my box lies in the arrange- The blank is made of paper or other foldment of the fastening means, and it will be able material, and it comprises a bottom 10, noticed that the whole blank as constructed 0 which is formed by the parallel score-lines 11 is practically rectangular in shape and cuts and the second parallel score-lines 12, these to great advantage. score-lines 11 and 12 intersecting at the cor- When the box is to be set up, the end pieces ners, as the drawings show, thus forming the 13 are turned up to a vertical position, the end and side pieces 13 and 14. The scoreside pieces 14; and 15 are likewise turned up 35 lines 11 after passing the score-lines 12 are to a vertical position, the end flaps 17 are cut through, so that the end pieces 13 may be folded inward against and parallel with the free and clear to turn up to a vertical position, end pieces 13, and the end flaps 17 are folded and the score-lines 12 are continued along the inward, so as to overlap the end pieces and blank, forming the side pieces 14 and 15 and the-end flaps 17, the extensions 18 are bent 40 also forming the end flaps 17 and 17, which around the back of the box, the wings 21 are 0 when the side pieces 14 and 15 are turned up turned inward on the lines 20 and tucked to a vertical position are adapted to fold inthrough the slots 16, and the wings 21 are ward across the box ends, as presently dethen opened, as shown in Fig. 2, thus making scribed. The side piece 15 forms the back of a positive fastening and preventing the acci- 45 the box, and in it are the slots 16, which are dental withdrawal of the fastening-tongues. placed, preferably, near the ends and which It will be seen, of course, that in a wide box are vertically arranged,although this arrangethe fastening-tongues might be produced on ment is not essential. The end flaps 17 have both the end flaps 17 and 17 and the slots projecting reduced extensions 18, which are made through the box ends with the same cf- 50 adapted to fold over on the lines 18, and these feet; but the box would not be so strong, be-
cause by making the box as shown the end flap 17, together with the extension 18, serves as a sort of hoop extending around the box ends and binding the box front, end, and back together.
It will be noticed that if the flaps and cover or top 23 are left off the blank ,then a rectangular box-body is formed which can be used with a cover similarly formed or with any appropriate cover or even Without a cover.
It will be noticed that if the flaps 17 were dispensed with, still a box could be made which would not be quite so good, but would answer for some purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a box-blank comprising a bottom portion scored around, end pieces projecting from opposite sides of the bottom portion, side pieces, one of which has slots therein, projecting from the two remaining sides ofthe bottom portion, end flaps projecting from the ends of the slotted side pieces, and a second pair of end flaps projecting from the opposite side piece, the second pair of end flaps being long enough to overlap the box ends and provided with tongues to enter the aforesaid slots when the box is folded.
2. Abox-blank comprising a scored-around bottom portion, end pieces projecting from opposite sides of the bottom portion, side pieces projecting from the two remaining opposite sides of the bottom, one of said side pieces being slotted, end flaps projecting from the slotted side piece, a second pair of end length of the slots aforesaid so as to be thrust through the" slots in adoubled or folded position.
3. A folding box comprising a bottom portion, end pieces projecting from opposite sides thereof, side pieces projecting from the two remaining sides, one of said side pieces being provided with slots, end flaps on the slot-ted side pieces, a second pair of end flaps on the second side piece, an extension on each of the second end flaps, and foldable tongues on each of said extensions, said tongues being adapted to be pushed through the aforesaid slots, substantially as described.
4. A folding box com-prisinga bottom piece, end pieces projecting from opposite sides thereof, side pieces projecting from the two remaining opposite sides of the bottom piece,
one of the said pieces being slotted, and flaps projecting from the unslotted side pieces, said flaps being long enough to overlap the box ends and having terminal tongues wider than the length of the slots, substantially as described.
