ARCHIE EDIVARDS BROWN, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
ATTACHMENT FOR lHlMBLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 648,842, dated May 1, 1900.
Application filed July 1, 1899. Serial No. 722,589. N m dem State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Thimbles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in attachments to thimbles.
The obj ects of the invention are to produce a device of simple construction for cutting the thread when sewing that can be readily applied to old as well as to new thimbles; also, to produce the device in such manner that the thread can be quickly and conveniently cut at any desired point in an expeditious manner; also, that it will not interfere with the ordinary sewing, that it can be easily applied to any thimble at a reasonable cost, and finally that it will not get out of order and is always ready for operation.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction of certain details and'a novel a1.- rangement of parts, as will be fully described and specifically pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsand letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters indicate similar parts in the dif- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a thimble with my attachment applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on line at a; of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the knife in a modified form.
In the, drawings, A represents the shell or body of an ordinary thimble, made of silver,
gold, steel, or any other suitable material and anydesired size. It is of the usual construction and has on one side a hollow U or V shaped flange B, in which isarranged aknife or blade 0, made of steel or other suitable material, and is held in place by one or more with the employment of scissors or other instruments, as is now required. I
If desired, the knife 0 may be provided with slots (1 for adj usting it whenworn down by employment and sharpening, as is shown in Fig. 4.
The advantages of my mproved thimble will be apparent to those usingit, and among them may be mentioned that the necessityof using scissors, knives, &e.-, is obviated. It
is simple and not likely to get out of order,
can be easily and cheaply produced, saves time when sewing, and is always ready for use.
In sewing the thimble is worn on the second finger of the right hand, with the. flange toward the ball orotherwise', as may be preferred, the needle being held between the thumb and index finger. The thread is pulled across the thimbl'e into the notch 0, while the material or other end of thethread is held by the left. hand, which draws the thread taut across the blade or knife which cuts it as may be desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
As a new article of manufacture, the thimble described, consisting of the body A, having on one side the doubleflange 13, forming a groove and having a'not'ch a, centrally located therein, the knife 0 having slots cl located at each, end thereof, adapted to secureand adjust said knife by means of the screws 1), that pass through said slots in the knife,
