IMPROVEMENT IN BABY-CARRIAGE;
digs 5111mm rrfnnh in in tine ftnttns int-i ant mating pin it its smut.
i Be it known that I, S; SAYRE WOODRUFF, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Carriages; andIdo hereby decla're that the following is a full, clear, and exact desc'riptiori of the same, reference beinghad to the nccompnnying drawings, making a. portionof this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of ababy-carriuge coirstructedoccording to my invention.
Figure 2 iso. plan view of the same, v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures. v p This invention consists in a reversible pivoted tongue, 50- combined with the body of .a suitable carriage that the said carriage, whenin use, unity be eith'erdrawh or pushed along, as may be desired, witheq ualeonv'enience andfacility. The invention furth er consists in the combination of a tongue of this description constructed with elastic sides, in combination with lugs or steps formed upon the body of the carriage, whereby such tongue may be very easily and efl'ectuolly secured in' either a. forward or rearward position upon the carriage,'as 1nay be required.
' To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I'will proceed to: describe it with reference to the drawings. I
The body of the carriage is represented at A, and is supported upon the two main wheels B, and furnished,
' when preferred, with a caster-wheeL-a, at its forward end. The tongue or shaft, by which the carriage is drawn or pushed along, as the case may be, is marked C, and has the lower endsof its two side portions'.a* pivoted to. the opposite sides of the-body A, near the bottom thereof in any suitable manner, or, if desired, the said tongue may be pivoted directly uponthe axle c of the main or supporting'wheelsB. The said tongue b'eing'thus pivoted may be turned-into a forward position, as shown in 'blaok'in the drawings, so as to permit the carriage to be drawn thereby when desired, or may be turned back intothe position shown in red outline in fig. 1, which being done, the carriage may be pushed along by means of the said: tongue, instead of being drawn, asjust mentioned. In order to provide for the proper retention of the tongue C in either position, when the carriage is in use, there is secured upon each side of the ,rear part of the body A an ear or step, d, which has formed inita notch, a. Secured in like manner to'the forward part of the bodyA, one upon each side thereof, are two similar ears or steps e, which, like the ears (1, are formed with notches, also marked a. These ears (i above their surfaces made sloping o'r inclined, as shown more fully in fig. 2, inorder to facilitate the passing of the elastic sides a* of the tongue C over or upon the said ears, as presently eziplained. The two side portions a* ot' the tongue 0 are made sufficiently elastic to be capable of yielding slightly in a lateral-direction, so that when the tongue is I 'turned forward, as hereinbeforc set forth, the said sides will pass ove;r or upon the ears e and enterthe notches (if thereof, and be held in position thereby as required in drawing the carriage, and so that when the tongue is turned backf es shown in red outline in fig. 1, and also hereinbefore explained, the said sides will, in a similar iiisnner, catch in the notches a of the ears (Z and hold the tongue in such rearward positionas required pushing instead of drawing the carriage. i a
By making thetongue reversible in this manner the cnrriage lnnyberery readilyeonverted from om capable of being drawn into one capable of being pushed along, and the means just described render the retention of the tongue in-either position as firm and seeure'as it" the said tongue were permanently attached in suci position to the carriage.
What I eiairr as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi v 1. The combination of the pivoted reversible tongue or shafts with the body of the carriage, substa'ntiall;
as herein set forth for-tho purpose specified. r e
2. The combination of the pivoted reversible tongue orshafts oonstructed with elastic sides, asset forth, wit] the ears or steps (I and e formed upon the-body of the carriage, substantially as and for the purpose specified s. SAYRE WOODBUFF.
