Description

No. 647,988. Patented Apr. 24', I900. .1. ROZANSKY.
TUBNBUCKLE.
(Application filed Jan. 20, 1900.)
(No Model.)
' //v vElvron J0 M 20 9 away UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE,
JOHN ROZANSKY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
TURNBUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 647,988, dated April 24, 1900.
Application filed January 20, 1900.
T0 (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN RozANsKY, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turnbuckles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom pan ying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in turnbuckles, and is particularly adapted for use upon railway-cars.
The invention has for its object to provide a turnbuckle with means for securely connecting the sections together to prevent the longitudinal movement thereof when once placed in position.
The invention has for its further object to construct a turnbuckle of the above-described character which will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, and efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view my invention finally consists in the novel combination and arrangementof parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Indescribing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and Wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved turnbuckle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the connecting-turnbuckle mounted upon the sections of the draft-bolt. Fig. 3is a side view of the connecting means with the locking-sleeve removed. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view thereof, taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 and Q'indicate the sections of the draft-bolt, which are screwthreaded upon one end, as at 3. These sections are connected together by means of a turnbuckle 4, provided with a transversely-extending opening 5 and annular sleeves 6 7. The buckle and sleeves are each provided with a screwthreaded opening, registering together, the sleeve 6 and its corresponding opening in the Serial No. 2,187. (No model.)
turnbuckle being provided with right-hand screw-threads and the sleeve '7 with its corresponding opening in the turnbuckle with lefthand screw-threads. When the sections of the bolt are in position, as shown, the buckle is prevented from turning thereon by means of the locking-sleeves 8 9. The sleeve 8 is provided with interior left-hand screw-threads, meshing with exterior screw-threads on the sleeve 6, and the sleeve 9 is formed with interior left-hand screw-threads, meshing with exterior screw-threads of the sleeve '7. The locking-sleeves 8 9 are further provided with a shoulder 10, which abuts against the end of the sleeves 6 7, and the openings in the sleeves 89 adjacent to the end of the sleeves 6 7 are provided with screw-threads, meshing with the screw-threads of the sections 1 2 of the bolt.
It will be observed that when the buckle is in position the same cannot be turned, because the screw-threads of the locking-sleeves are oppositely disposed to the screw-threads formed in the buckle and sleeves 6 7, which mesh with the sections of the bolt, and, furthermore, the sections of the bolt cannot turn the locking-sleeves, because they are formed for right and left hand screwthreads, as shown.
By the arrangement set forth the sections of the bolt when secured to the buckle are prevented from turning, as heretofore stated, when the locking-sleeves are mounted upon the buckle, thus overcoming the objectionable feature of the loosening of the buckle, and it is thought that the many advantages of my improved construction can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawmgs.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In combination, a buckle provided with a transverse] yextending opening and a pair of longitudinally extending openings one of which is provided with right-hand screwthreads and the opposite with left-hand screwthreads, a sleeve formed integral with each side of the said buckle registering with said longitudinal openings and provided with interior screw-threads of the same arrangement as the screw-threads of the registering opening and further provided with screwthreads on the periphery thereof oppositely arranged from the interior screw-threads, said buckle and sleeves adapted to receive screw-threaded ends of the sections of the bolt, and a lockin g-sleeve mounted on each of the said sleeves provided with interiorly arranged screwthreads meshing with screw-threads on the periphery of the sleeve upon which it is mounted and further provided with a shoulder abutting against the outer end of said sleeve and with screw-threads meshing with the screwthreads of the sections of the bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
1 s JOHN ROZANSKY.
