TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONGERN:
Be it known that'I, CHARLES W. CARDQT, of Fredonia, county of Chautauqua, and State of New York,-have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in-Attaching the Draught-Pole to Mowing Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is'a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which i I Figure is-a side elevation of the principal parts of. a mowing machine with the draught-pole attached according to my improved method; and I Figure II is a plan of same. 1
The nature of this invention consists in the construction of a. gear-frame and shoe, constructed as herein described, and journalled to the axle of the driving-wheels in a two-wheeled machine, and having thepoint of the attachment of the draught between the axle and the shoe. 4 i
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the axle or driving-shaft of the machine supported upon the driving-wheels A in an ordinary manner. B represents the frame of the inner shoe supported by' and hinged to the axle or driving-shaft, as seen at b 6". This frame is connected iviththe inner shoe D of the machine, to which shoe the finger-bar is attached. 0 is the draught-pole ortongue attached to the shoe-frame by ahinged connection at a. point or points below the level of the driving-axle and between itg-a ndthe shoe, as shown in the drawings ate 0. i V
Attempts have been made in various machines to overcome the drag of the shoe-=upon the ground by supporting it upon a roller or wheel,=and other similar devices-but as yet lightness ofdraught has not been secured without constructing the machine so light and weak as to make itunfit for= eificient service. My improvement overcomes the diiliculty by causing the same power which is applied to drive the machine at the same time to lift upon the shoe and finger-bar, thus causing the shoe to slide much more easily upon the grdund without enfeebling any part of the frame of the shoe or shoe by making it lighter than is necessary to stand the strain to which these parts are subjected. The draught of the team is'by this improvement applied directly to relieve the pressure of the shoe and finger-bar upon the ground, which as a consequence produces a lighter draught of the machine, as a whole,- without in any sense destroying or impairing its efiieiency.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a two-wheeled machine having a gear-frame and shoe, constructed as herein described, and journalled to the axle of the driving-wheels, I claim the attachment of the draught-pole to such frame at a point or points between the axle and shoe, for the purpose and substantially as described. I 4
