IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.v
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 19,703, dated March 23, 1858.
BLACK, and ROBERT ALLsTATTER, of Hamilton, in the county ot'Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement l in Harvesters; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to.` the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is an elevation of gear side of machine. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the machine. Fig. 3 is an elevation of divider side. Fig. 4 is a section on w :v through axis of gear- Wheel, showing manner of attaching axle to frame.

Our invention has reference to the manner of elevating the cutter-bar and of supporting the platform. The details of construction and operationv will readily be understood from the following' description and reference to the drawings:
The machine is supported by wheels W W', the axle a of the former being secured to the box b, movable in the curved slot c of a guidepiece, d, secured to the gear-support A of the mainframe. The box b is secured to the guidepiece d by a nut, c, on the end of axle a. This box has an arm, f, extending forward and connected With a bar, g, running across the piece A of frame by an eye, as shown in Fig. l. The lever l, secured to the box, serves to move the box in its guides d when nutc is loosened, the frame of the machine adjusting itself to the desired height. rlJ-he axle c of Wheel W moves in guides d', and is held in position by a nut, c. The axle passes through a lever, l', having its fulcrum at h on upright t'. By this construcv 'tion the divider side of the machine is adjusted to the elevation given the opposite side.
The drivers seat B is upon a tongue, C, hinged to the main frame at k, and supported upon wheels D to the axle, of which the draftpole is secured. The gear-support A runs up toward the rear, as shown in Fig. l, for the4 purpose of permitting the cut grain to be more readily removed from the platform and de-l posited upon the ground. At its upper extremity it is connected by the bar E with the inclined brace F on the opposite side of the machine. c
Running through the extremities of the bar E and curving under it, is the stay-rod G, supporting the rear of platform P by the suspending-rods r r, as shown in Fig. 2, the platform being attached by the points of 'braces t entering between the plates of the finger-bar and that the hand of the driver upon the extremity of lever L will cause this joint to rise or fall, and thus regulate the elevation and depression ot' the finger-bar, .the jointed' levers, with the tongue and frame A, acting upon the principle ofthe togglejoint.
The elevation of the cutter-bar is adjusted by means of the guide-pieces in which the axles of the Wheels move, as hereinbefore described, and any' temporary. elevation of the linger-bar for the passage of obstacles or other purpose .is given by tbe hand of the driver acting on lever L.
