Letters Patent No. 64,656, dated )fag/.14, 1867.
PIPE-WRENCH.
'lO ALLPERSONS T0 WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I MOSES H. FREEMAN, of Somerville, in the count) of Middlesex, and Stute of Messa.- chusetts, have invented mi improved Pipe-Wrench, and do hereby declare the sonic to be fully described in the following specification, 'ndrepresented in the ziccornplinying drawings, of whieh- Figure 1 is 51. side elevation; und" i Figure 2 u. vertical seetionfot it. Figure is n. transverse section of it, token through its clasp. In the said drawings, A denotes a stetionary jow projecting from u, har, B, at o. right angle, or tbereabouts, therewith, t-he said bm" being provided with a. handle, G, and lso with u series, C, of notches made in .that edge of it from which the jew projects, and with respect to such jams shown in fig. 2. A cla-sp, D, encompasses the bm B, nndprojects buckv from n lever, F, carrying :1. movable jaw, E., The seid lever I", whose fnlcrumis n tooth, a, which extends from it into one Aofthe notches ofthe stries C, is formed und .arranged with the clasp as represented in lig. 2. y A spring, Il, is placed within the clusp l), fastened :it its .iniddle thereto', 'und is arranged so tha-tneorits endsvit may bean` against the lbnr B, the saine being as represented in lig. 2.
The lever F, fixed to the slide D, will be moved by in whenever such `slide is moved either laterally or longitudinally with respect to the bor B. 'lhe lslide should have so much lateral play on the bar B :is to enable a person, by moving the slide on and transversely of the bur, to move the lever in e manner to disengage itsvtooth, a from the series of notches, in order that the slide, with thejziw F, may befmoved either neu-rer to or further from the stationary jaw A. The spring H serves to draw the slideback so as to bring the tooth into the notch intended to receive it. It also serves to close the janv Evnpon'u pipe. By pressing on the tail of the lever F, l
so as to force it toward the bar'B, the jew E will be moved so :is to Ineke a gre-eter :ingle with the foce of the jaw A, such beinfar to open the jaws so es to enuble them to receive a. pipe, after the Inova-ble one may have been adjusted to its proper distance from the other, for holding the pipe against it. In this wrench the adjustment skilled in mechanism. v
What I claim in it is the combination as well as the arrangement of the clasp D and spring H, the tooth ofthe .movziblejaw can be very easily or quickly effected, as will be readily observed by most if notall persons A., the series C of notches, thejaws E A, and the ber B.
I also claim the combination us well cs the arrznigementof the lever l" with the clasp D, the spring H, the tooth a, the series C of notches, the jaws, E A, and the bm' B, such bnr being provided with a. handle, and the whole being constructed so as to operate substztntiellyhrts hereinbetore explained. l
MOSES 1I. FREEMAN.
