IVllLK-STRAINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,434, dated April 3, 1900.
Application filed December 6, 1899. Serial No. 739,416. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ERIK S. LAGERQUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at OX ford Depot, in the county of Orange and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l\Iilk-Strainers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which .it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in strainers, particularly for use in dairies for straining milk; and it consists in the novel strainer hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout both views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the strainer, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same.
The device consists of a body A, preferably cylindrical in form and having a funnelshaped or conical bottom A2, provided with an opening A0 in its bottom or apex. About this opening and concentric therewith is a cylindrical extension A', which is provided with the screw-threaded end adapted to receive a screw-threaded cap A4 for closing the same. The exteriorsurface of said cylindrical extension A' is preferably provided with au annular flange orshoulder a', against which the edge of the screwcap A4 may bear when screwed full upon the said extension, thus forming a close joint.
The sloping or conical bottom A2 of the strainer is provided with a series of openings A3, over which are secured pieces'of wire mesh AX. These openings are arranged at approximately the same distance from the opening A0 in the center of the bottom of the strainer and radially about the said opening. A central tube B, preferably cylindrical in form and of a diameter approximately that of the opening Aoin the bottom of the strainer, is xed in a position corresponding to the axis of the strainer, with its bottom end concentric with the opening A". The said tube B is provided, circumferentially, with openings B0 at intervals, the said openings being in coin- 1n unication with the central openingAo in the bottom of the strainer and arranged to allow the passage of liquid into the cylindrical extension A', which is in the nature of a well,
from clogging the strainer; but without some arrangement for avoiding it there would be an objectionable suction and disturbance of any sediment in the said well A whenever liquid is poured into the vessel A. By the use of the central tube B this objectionable disturbance is as far as practicable avoided, inasmuch as the disturbance created in the Well A' when liquid is poured into the vessel A is confined to the said tube B, the liquid rising in the said tube and afterward settling into the well A. The openings B0 about the bottom of the tube B allow the sediment to pass into the well A with a small body of the liquid which is retained therein. The openings BO are arranged opposite the straineropenings As to facilitate the passage of the sediment into the well A', as hereinbefore described.
Although I have described and shown the device as being of a circular form, I do not wish to limit myself to this particular shape, which may be varied at will without altering the essential featuresY of construction.'
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, isl. In a'liquid-strainer, the combination with a body having a sloping bottom provided with arcentral opening and aneXtension beneath said opening provided with a remov-l able closure, said bottom having perforations therein; and straining material covering said openings; of a hollow tube Iixed over the opening in said bottom and provided with openings about its lower end communicating with lthe opening in the bottom of the vessel, the
said hollow tube extending to or above the level of the rim of the vessel; substantially as described.
2. In a liquid-strainer, the combination with a vessel for receiving liquids, provided with a sloping bottom, having a central opening and strainer-openings arranged about said central opening; strainer material covering said strainer-openings; a Well or extension permanently connected to the central opening; of a hollow ltube extending above the rim of the vessel and having openings about its bottom end for the passage of liquid from the body of the vessel into the said Well or extension; substantially as described.
In adevice for strainingliquids,l1e combination With the vessel A, having a funnelshaped bottom A2 provided with central bot- ERIK S. LAGERQUIST.
