CATTLE-TIE.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, E. P. BANKS, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useinllmproved Cattle-Tie; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a side view of one form of my invention, and illustrates the method of operation. Figure 2, a top view of the clamp. p Figure 3, a side sectional view of the other form of my invention, and illustrates the method of operation. I am aware of'a. number of inventions having in view a similar object with mine, but of a different construction and'operation. I contemplate the application of my invention in two forms, which I will now describe separately, secured to or detached from the stanchion easily and readily. At the parts of the clamp indicated by 3 a space is left open to allow the bow to pass in and out, as shown by the dotted line in fig. 1. Another method in which I contemplate the application of my invention is illustrated in fig. 3, all parts being the same, except those following, viz: Press the bow Z; down in the direction of the arrow so that both ends shall project below the clamp a and free the hooks from the clamp. Then'draw out from the recess in the side of the clamp v a one end or arm of the bow b, and then swing the bow oft laterally, as seenin fig. 3, and there illustrated by the clamp, being shown in dotted lines, the bow b pushed down through, as described,'and turned oil to one side. In the case of fig. 1 the bow turns out vertically, but in fig. 3 it swings laterally, there being no pivot, t, in the case of fig. 3, but one arm of the bow 6 serving for a pivot. A reverse of both these operations returns the bows to their places. Another convenience of these methods is that the ties can be reversed and the how be placed around the creatures neck, if desired, and the rope used to secure thetie to the stanchion. 1 In fig. 1, a shows a-clamp, in the sides of which are confined the ends of the bow b, at e. at shows a bolt, (see fig/3,) having a head, e, and' the holef in the shank thereof. Through .the centre of the clamp a is an aperture, (see fig. 2,) with a shoulder, h, for the head of the bolt 01 to rest upon. This is clearly shown in fig. 3. The rope, or other article, which passes around the creatures neck is first inserted through the holef. The rope keeps the bolt 01 from slipping through the clamp in one direction, and the head e prevents it from being drawn out in the other. The bolt turns readily on its head, resting on the shoulder It, and so prevents the rope that secures the creature from becoming twisted. The how I; in fig. 1 is furnished with a hook at each end, as illustrated in the drawing. One of those hooks 01' eyelets passes around a pivot in the clamp I), (see The hook on the other end of the bow passes over a projection, 1, in the clamp, which serves to keep it in place, a hole being made in the clamp to receive the end 2 of the hook. By pressing this end of the bow around inthe direction of the arrow the hook will become disengaged from its place, and then it can be turned off on its pivot i, as illustrated by the dotted lines in fig. 1. Thus the tie can be used. Nuts may, if desired, be placed on the arms of the bows to keep them in place in the clamps.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the bolt d, clamp a, and bow b, when constructed as set forth in fig. 1, and for the purposes specified.
