VNITED STATES ATENT Fries,
JAMES ARTHUR HARVEY, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
PHOTOG RAPHlC-PRINT FABRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,952, dated March 2'7, 1900.
Application filed April 2, 1898. fierial No. 676,231. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Lluans ARTHUR HARVEY, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Printing Materials, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved fabric material to be sensitized and on which a shadow is cast by exposure-to the light which passes through a transparent drawing, tracing, negative plate, film, or other object and forms a print of whatever is desired to be printed and which is fully developedby a subsequent bath.
The objects of the said invention are, first, to produce a photographic-print fabric possessing greater strength and durability than paper or other material or materials heretofore in use, whether of the negative or positive, and of blue, black, or other colors; second, a photographic material that does not stretch or alter its dimensions during the bathing or development thereof, thereby preserving the correct scale, size, or dimension of the drawing or object produced thereon; third, a photographic-ground material that does not partake of permanent set or a tendency to roll up when opened out after having been kept rolled some time, and, fourth, a photographic-print fabric that is unaffected by Wet or moisture.
In the accompanying drawing, intended to illustrate my invention, the single figure showsarectangularpiecehaving the portionA to designate the sensitized face or surface, B to designate the fabric or meshed surface before being sensitized, and O to represent the rightend portion, the rubber backing having the fabric removed from the front of it and exhibiting the meshed surface similar to but darker than the fabric.
My invention consists in applying a water= proof backing O or surface to awoven fabric B, of fine and uniform mesh or texture, so as not to destroy the absorbent quality of the unfaced surface of the fabric by passing through or fully permeating the said fabric, and thereby preventing the surface receiving the usual sensitizing solution. The fabric B may be linen, cotton, silk, fine Woolen, or other fiber, and the backing 0, applied thereto, is essentially pliable and waterproof and may be either rubber or a composition of non-drying oil, white lead, and other substances to form a pliable pigment when applied to the fabric. The opposite side of the fabric from that coated as described is sensitized, similarly as paper is prepared, with bromid, nitrate, or ferricyanid solutions, and on these I make no claim of novelty, being well known in photography.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
As a new article of manufacture, a photograph-print fabric composed of a woven fab ric of fine and uniform texture having one surface or side thereof coated with a pliable waterproof material or composition, and the opposite or reverse surface sensitized with a photographic solution, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES ARTHUR HARVEY.
