NITED STATES TATENT OFFICE.
ANDREAS PITTROFF, OF FRANKFORT-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO WERNIGK & MULLER, OF WALDIIEIM,
GERMANY.
WELT-GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,634, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed December 24, 1897. Serial No. 663,316- (No model.)
T 00 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREAS PITTROFF, of Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Welt-Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to welt-guides for sewing-machines, and has for its object to produce a welt-guide which will efliciently guide a slitted welt and maintain the same open to receive the piercer of the sewing-machine, which operates to sew the welt in place.
. My invention consists in a welt-guide, an example of which willbe shown in the drawings by way of illustration, the salient features being recited in the claim at the end of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a strip of leather from which the welt is formed. Fig. 2 shows the same structure as Fig. 1 slitted to form the welt. Fig. 3 shows the said welt open. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of a welt-guide in which my invention is embodied, and Fig. 5 is a plan view thereof.
The welt (most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3) consists of a slitted strip whose lower portion a is thicker than the upper portion 19, the portion a contacting with the upper when the welt is sewed in place. This welt is suitably guided and opened by the welt-guide shown in Figs. 4 and 5. In these figures, e is an arm carryihg a plurality of j awsthe exterior jaw m and the interior jaw n. The jaw 12 is bent sharply at the point m to receive the thick edge a of the welt to guide the same with certainty. From the point an the jaw extends upwardly to form a lip m The inner jaw n, is provided with an upwardly-projecting lip n and a laterally-projecting lip 0.
The lips at and m are located in proximity with each other and serve to guide the free edge 10 of the slitted welt. The edge of the slitted welt which traverses the guide is guided by an angular arm g, which is secured at r to the arm 6 of the welt-guide. It will be observed that the sharp bend m is as nearly as practicable angular, so as to form a seat or recess for securely guiding the welt, and this seat or recess 'm, taken in combination with the laterally-projecting lip 0, guides the welt with great certainty.
The welt shown herein forms subject-matter of a divisional application filed by me on January 4, 1900, Serial No. 304.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a sewing-machine welt-guide adapted to guide a slitted welt substantially as described, the combination of a supporting-arm e, an outer jaw m provided with a sharp bend or seat m for receiving the thick edge of the welt and with an upwardly-projecting lip m an inner jaw 12 provided with the upwardlyprojecting lip n and the laterally-projecting lip 0 and an edge-guide q located in the recess between the jaws and placed opposite to the sharp bend or seat m, the said lips 01' m having between them a free opening between which the edge 10 of the welt is adapted to project.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDREAS PITTROFF.
