UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HENRY BARROVS, OF ELLENDALE, DELAWARE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO S. F. GARDINER, OF MILFORD, DELAWARE.
swl'NelNe CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,454, dated February 13, 1900,
Application filed September 14, 1899. Serial No. 730,496. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY BAR- Rovvs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellendale, in the county of Sussex and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swinging Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in swinging chairs equally applicable for various other analogous articles, as swings, loungingchairs for parlor, lawn, or veranda, or for couches or beds.
Ithas for its object to greatly simplify the construction and arrangement of parts, including lessening cost of manufacture, and to otherwise promote utility, convenience, and facility in use.
It consists of the detailed construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a hori'- zontal section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
It will be understood that I do not limit my self to details herein, as they may be changed at will Without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected.
In the organization of my invention I provide the usual chair or seat l with a sliding or extensable and retractible foot-rest 2, comprising a bar or arm 2a, slid in a suitable socket or support 3 under the chair for convenient use, and a cross-bar 3, iixed to the forward end of said arm.
The chair l has suitably connected to it parallel suspending-bars 4 4, suitably braced or connected together, their lower ends being secured to an axial or cylindric cross-rod passin gunder said chair through apertures or resting in bearings secured thereunder. The
suspending-bars are arranged alongside of arched brackets 5, secured to the chair-arms,
terminated at their outer ends in preferably A disk-like heads 7, bearing against the outer sides of said chair-arm brackets. This arrangement permits of the ready relative adj ustment and clamping together of said suspending-bars and chair to vary the angle of adjustment or inclination of the seat or chair to the horizontal to suit the ease or-comfort of the occupant.
This chair may be suspended in position in any suitable location, as will be appreciated, by a single spring or two springs, either in a portably-erected frame or from an overhead support.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desirento secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a chair of the character described, the combination of a seat or chair, and parallel suspending-bars suitably braced or connected together, with their lower ends secured to a cross-rod or pivot bearing in the under side of said seat or chair and means for the relative adjustment and clamping together of said suspending-bars and chair or seat, substantially as set forth.
2. In a chair of the character described, the combination of a seat or chair and parallel suspending-bars with their lower connecting cross-rod bearing in the under side of said chair or seat, a set or adjustig screw working in a screw-threaded aperture of a block or piece in each of said suspending-bars, and having one end provided with a hand-wheel and its other end terminating in a disk or plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES HENRY BARROWS.
