LOUISA P. BUNNELL AND \VILLIAM NICHOLS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
SELF-=THREADING NEEDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,398, dated February 13, i900. Application filed January 10, 1899. Serial No. 701,711. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUISA P. BUNNELL and WILLIAM NIcHoLs,citizens of the United States, residing at Toledo,Lucas county, Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Imthread into the eye laterally through a trans verse opening provided for that purpose, but such devices have not proved satisfactory and have failed to come into public use for various reasons, the chief of which is that the outer edges of the lateral opening have caught in the fabric as the needle passes into and out of the goods, thus marring the fabric; also, that the thread does not remain in the eye of the needle, but at times slips out through the opening, causing annoyance and delay.
Our invention relates to and its object is to provide means for overcoming the difficulties here indicated and to furnish a needle which may be threaded without passing the end of the thread into the eye of the needle, also to provide a needle which may be instantly threaded, even in the dark, and which will not injure the threads of the fabric upon which it is used and which will hold its thread in such manner that it cannot slip out of the eye of the needle. YVe accomplish these results by means of the device hereinafter described, and shown and illustrated in the single figure of the accompanying drawing, made part hereof, which represents a needle of exaggerated size constructed according to our angle to the axis of the needle, leading from The cut the side of the needle into the eye 0. cl leads to and coincides with the end of the eye next the point and at its inner end is barely of sufficient width vertically to permit the passage of the coarsest thread designed to be used with the needle.
l/Vhat we mean by the out being at a right shown, so that when the needle passes into and out of the fabric there will be no rough corner to catch the goods. The thread when passed laterally into the cut is guided by the flaring opening intothe eye. As the thread on one side of the needle always leads upwardly, it is not at any time permitted to slip into the narrow outlet of the cut.
The operation of our device is as follows: The thread is pressed laterally into the flaring mouth of the cut d and slides into the eye of the needle sidewise at the extreme bottom end of the eye. The normal position of the thread in the sewing-machine now pulls the thread above the cut 01, so that the thread cannot escape through the out. It will be seen that the rounded corners of the mouth of the cut prevent the threads of the fabric from being cut or torn and from finding their Way into the cut when the needle is in operation.
Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The needle herein described, the same having a cut at a right angle to the axis thereof and coinciding with the bottom of the eye, said out having a flaring mouth with upper and lower rounded corners, substantially as.
and for the purpose specified.
