TOY FIGURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,385, dated February 13, 1900. Application filed October 14, 1899. Serial No. 733,608. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR G. NEWELL, a citizenof the United States, residing in Glen Ridge, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Figures,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of stuffed figures that are used as toys for the amusement of children and more especially toa stuffed toy fign re which is made approximately of the size of an infant or child of a few years of age, said figure being made up from printed sections and the sections stitched together and stuffed \vitha s uitable filling ma terial;, and the objectof the invention is to supply a toy figure of very realistic appearance and that can be made up at comparatively small expense and forinan attractive toy for children.
The invention consists of a toy figure composed of printed front and rear sections, the front section being provided with recessed lower ends and the rear section with straight lower ends and tapering foot-sections consisting of tapering middle portions stitched to the recessed lower ends of the front section,
V and sole-flaps forming the soles of the feet and stitched at their rear ends to the straight ends of the rear section, so as to form the heels, the whole receptacle thus formed being stuffed with a suitable filling material, and, further, in certain details of construction to be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved toy figure as made up. Fig. 2 is a front view of the blank from which the sections of my irnproved toy figure are out, showing the sections printed on the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3 3, Fig. 1, through the body of the figure; and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on line 4 4, Fig. 1, through the foot of the figure.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
My improved toy figure is made up from sections that are printed or otherwise marked in suitable colors on cotton cloth or other suitable textile fabric. Four pieces or sections are used-na1nely, a front section a, a
rear section b, and two foot-sections d. These sections are printed in suitable colors and provided, as shown in Fig. 2, with suitable marginal lines along which the sections are cut out from the piece of fabric. The different sections are so printed as to represent a so-called life-size doll-i. 6., toy figure of the size of an infant or child of about two or three years of age, so that a comparatively large sized doll is obtained. The lower end of the legs of the toy figure are printed to rep resent the upper portions of the shoes and are provided with curved recesses a, whilethe lower ends of the rear section are cut off with straight edges, as shown in Fig. 2. The feet are formed by two additional foot-sections d d, which consist of tapering middle portions of a size corresponding in width at one edge to the curved edge of the lower end of the front section, while the narrower end of the foot-section forms the toe. At both sides of the flaring foot-section are provided soleflaps d. The sole-flaps are curved at their front ends, so that when folded beneath the middle portion the front ends register with the front end of the middle portion. The rear ends of the sole-flaps are also curved, so as to connect with the rear section when the figure is made up.
When the toy figure is to be made up, the various sections are first cut out along the marginal lines. The foot-sections are then sewed to the front sections along the edge of' the figure, the wider edge of'the foot-sections being sewed to the recessed lower ends of the front section. The sole-flaps at each side are then folded over and the seam sewed across the front-4. e., the toe-'and down the middle of the sole. The back and front sections,
now turned right side out through this aperture. The heels are then overcast, the rear ends of the sole-flaps d being sewed strongly to the straight edges of the lower ends of the rear section. In order to strengthen the soles, sole-pieces e of heavy cardboard or other suitable material are now inserted into the footsections and the stuffing then commenced, the feet and legs, hands and arms, head, and body portion being successively stuffed and the filling-opening then sewed up. The stuffing may be cotton or any other suitable filling material.
My improved toy figure has the advantages of cheapness of construction and attractive appearance possessed by similar toy figures heretofore in use as toys for children; but it possesses greater durability by reason of the fact that the foot-sections are cut out separate from the body-sections and are of such form as to require only one seam, that being at the reinforced sole of the foot. Seams at the side of the foot are avoided. Further, by
reason of the strong connection between the foot and body sections obtained by the recessa child.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A toy figure, composed of printed front and rear sections, the front section being provided with recessed lower ends, and the rear section with straight lower ends, and tapering foot-sections consisting of tapering middle portions stitched to the recessed lower ends of the front section, and sole-flaps forming the soles of the feet and stitched at their rear ends to the straight ends of the rear section so as to form the heels, the whole receptacle thus formed being stuffed with a suitable filling material, substantially as set forth.
2. 'A blank for the foot-section of a toyfigure, composed of a tapering middle portion rounded off at its front end, and. sole-flaps at each side of said middle portion, said soleflaps having straight sides and curved front and rear ends, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDGAR G. NEWELL.
