UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BERNARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 642,780, dated February 6, 1900. Application filed September 29, 1897. Serial No. 653,434. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BERNARD, a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined holders, and more particularly to such as are adapted to receive a sponge, soap, and a brush, the objects of the invention being to produce a holder of the class mentioned which shall be ornamental in appearance and comparatively cheap to construct, which can be readily supported on a bath-tub or hung against the wall, and which shall be effectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
With-these objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View illustrating my improvements. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 illustrate modifications. Fig. 5 is a detail View.
A represents a rectangular frame made, preferably, of stout wire and divided into two sections 1 2 by means of a transverse bar '3, located nearer one end of the frame than the other, said transverse bar being secured to the longitudinal bars of the frame by means of suitable couplings 4. The section 1 of the frame has secured thereto, by means of suitable couplings 5, a series of curved wires or yokes 6, whereby to form an open compartmentfor the reception of a sponge. Smaller bent wires 7 8 are secured to the frame of the section 2 thereof and constitute a receptacle for soap. The wires 7 are secured to the longitudinal wires of the frame A in any suitable manner and suitably spaced apart, and the wires 8 are secured to the end bar of 'the frame and to the transverse bar 3, so as to prevent the soap from falling from the end of the frame or into the sponge-receptacle.
Hangers 10 10 are secured at their upper ends to the corners of the section 2 of the frame and depend therefrom, so as to form a support for a tray 11 for the reception of a brush. The tray 11 may be secured rigidly to the yokes 10 or itmay be removably supported thereby.
Arms 12 are attached to one of the longitudinal bars of the frame, either loosely or rigidly, as desired. These arms will preferably be made of flexible metal, so they can be readily bent to form hooks to be placed over the edge of a bath-tub, whereby to support the device thereon. If desired, the arms 12 may be displaced by lugs or ears 13, Fig. 2, having keyhole-slots 14 to receive a pin or other device driven into the wall of a room, or the device may be supported by means of rings, bent wires, or other devices, if desired.
My improvements are simple in construction, ornamental in appearance, and effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
Instead of constructing the soap-receptacle with the wires 7 8 these wires may be dispensed with and a metal or other pan 15 placed in the section 2 of the frame for the reception of soap, and the same is true of the sponge-holder, as shown at 16, Fig. 3.
I make no claim in this application to a combined soap and sponge holder consisting of two separate receptacles, the soap-holder being attached to and located outside and in front of the sponge-holder.
Other slight changes might be made in the details of construction of myinvention without departing from the spirit thereof or lim iting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth. For instance, instead of arranging the brush-holder below the soap holder said brush-holder may be arranged at the opposite end of the frame A, as shown in Fig. 4.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an article of manufacture, a combined holder comprising a rectangular top frame which constitutes the upper open portion of the holder, a cross-wire secured to this frame for dividingitinto sections, receptacles of different depths depending from each of these sections, the back of the deeper-section constituting an extended bearing to rest against a support, and hangers extending above the rectangular frame for supporting the holder and retaining the back in position against its support.
2. A new article of manufacture consisting of a rectangular frame divided into two sections, a sponge-holder in one section, a soapholder in the other section, hangers depending from the frame and a tray supported by said hangers, a short distance below the soapholder, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a combined holder consisting of a rectangular frame, a transverse bar secured to the longitudinal bars of said frame nearer one end than the other, whereby to form two sections, a series of bent wires or yokes seen red to the 1ongitudinal bars of the frame and spaced apart whereby to form a sponge-holder in the larger portion of the frame, a series of smaller bent wires secured to the longitudinal bars of the frame at the smaller section thereof to form a soap-receptacle and wires secured to the end bar of the frame and to said transverse bar to prevent the escape of the soap from the soap-receptacle, substantially as set forth.
4. A combined sponge and soap holder comprising an open horizontal oblong frame provided at its rear longitudinal edge with attachin g or suspension devices, a series of wires having short upturned ends secured to one end of the frame and forming a shallow depressed soap-holder, and another series of Wires having upturned ends of greater length than those of the first series and secured to the remaining larger portion of the said frame and forming a depressed sponge-holder of greater depth andcwidth than the said soapholder.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
