To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. NIES, of No. 451 Essex street, Swampscott, county of Essex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in a Oombined Collar-Button and Necktie-Holder, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and numerals on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to a combined collar-button and necktie-holder, and these two of which the collar-button can be applied in the usual manner and afterward the necktieholder can be connected thereto in such a manner that it may serve its function of holding the tie down either at the front or back of the collar.

In the embodiment of the invention represented in the accompanying drawings my improved device comprises a collar-button having a comparatively deep recess and a necktie-holder provided with a projection constructed to be frictionally held in the recess in such a manner that the necktie-holder can be quickly removed and applied as occasion requires. In practicethe projection is preferably a spring-arm extending from the body of the necktie-holder transversely to the tieholding arm or arms, and it is 'held within the recess or seat therefor simply by the resiliency of the spring-arm.

While I may separately manufacture the collar-button and the necktie-holder, as hereinafter set forth, I prefer to put the device as a whole upon the market and to so sell them to a user, so that the liability of either of them being lost is materially decreased.

The collar-button may be made of any suitable material or shape; but I prefer to form the necktie-holder of a continuous piece of resilient or spring wire bent to the proper shape to provide it with a spring-arm to engage in the recess or pocket of the collar-button and with one or more arms or hooks to serve to hold the tie down.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combined collar-button and necktieholder constructed in accordance with my Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, the section being taken centrally through the collar-button. Fig. 3 is a side elevation; and Fig. 4 represents a collar and tie and my improved device in connection therewith, showing the manner of using the latter.

The improved device in the form thereof represented in the accompanying drawings includes in its construction a collar-button, as G, that represented being shown provided with the back 5, stem or shank 6, and head 7, the head being slotted, as at 8, to receive the projection upon a necktie-holder, as N, which projection is resilient and is adapted to frictionally engage the wall of the recess or cavity 9 of the shank 6, the recess being made comparatively deep, as indicatedclearly in Fig. 2. It will therefore be understood that the recess 9 alines with the slot 8 in the head of the button, and in some cases the said head may be dispensed with.

The necktie holder itself is preferably formed of spring-wire and is bent at its middle to form the projection or loop 12, the arms or branches of which are provided with rounded offsets 13 and 14, adapted to engage the opposite walls of the recess 9 of the shank 6, as indicated in Fig. 2, and it will be seen upon inspection of said figure that the said branches are separated or spaced apart near the open end of the loop, so that the branches can be sprung toward each other to effect the removal of the projection 12 from its seat.

The wire forming the necktie-holder is extended laterally and oppositely from the open end of the loop projection 12 in the form of arms 15 and 16, at the ends of which the'hooks or tie- holders 17 and 18 are disposed.

Each of the tie-holders proper or hooks is of substantially inverted-U shape, the inner legs being much shorter than the outer ones, as shown in Fig. 3, and the tie is held between these legs or branches of the U shaped holders and against upward movement by the upper closed ends of the same.

In use the necktie-holder and collar-button will be detached, for example, by the user pinching the hooks 17 and 18, which causes the branches 13 and 14 of the loop projection 12 to approach each other, so that said projection can be readily detached from the shank of the button. lhe button is then applied in the familiar manner, after which the projection 12 is passed through the elongated slot 8 of the head 7 and subsequently into the hollow portion or recess 9 of the shank,where the branches of the loop projection can engage the opposite walls of said shank. The tie is then placed around the collar and its ends crossed in the front, and these crossed ends are inserted in the hooks 17 and 18, after which the knot is formed. The free ends of the hooks are rounded, as at 20, which construction prevents them from catching in the tie.

It will be evident that the button and the tie-holder can be manufactured separately; but I prefer to sell them in assembled condition or as they are represented in the several figures of the drawings. I

By the term wire as previously used here I intend to include similar material capable of being shaped or otherwise formed to produce the features hcrcinbefore set forth in detail.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A device of the class specified comprising a collar-button having a recess in its shank, longitudinally thereof and atie-holder of wire in one piece having two U-shaped members adapted to receive the crossed ends of a necktie and including a cross-piece uniting said members, said cross-piece being provided substantially at its middle, with a U-shaped spring-arm extending approximately at right angles therefrom and both branches of which are united to the cross-piece, and said springarm being adapted to befrictionally held within the recess and the collar-button.
