Description

No. 642,657. Patent ed m. 6, I900. J. m. wane.
LAMPLIGHTING ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP BHIMNEYS.
(Application filed May 18, 1899.)
("c.Model.)
WITNESSES.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC JOHN M. VHITE, OF ANNISTON, ALABAMA.
LAM PLIG'HTING ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP-CH IMNEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,657, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed May 13,1899. Serial No. 717,260. (No model.)
1'0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anniston, county of Calhoun, and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamplighting Attachments for Lam p-Chimneys, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in lam plighting attachments for lamp chimneys, the object thereof being to provide a simple and effective means for lighting a lamp without removing the chimney.
The device is simple in construction, inexpensive, and it is adapted to be safely and easily operated.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the anneXed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a lamp having my improvements attached thereto and illustrated in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation taken on the line a; 00 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the attachment, the chimney being in section, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional elevation illustrating a slight structural modification.
In the practice of my invention I employ a lamp-chimney A of ordinary or usual form,
having an aperture a leading therethrough.
on a line with the wick 1 of the lamp-burner 2. Within this said aperture (1 is a metallic cylinder B, having a flange Z) upon its inner I end. Adjustable upon the outer end of this said cylinder is a collar 0, the collar being preferably screw-th readed to the cylinder for the purpose of lateral adjustment to fit lampchimneys of variable degrees of thickness, the wall of the said lamp-chimney being clamped between the collar 0 and the flange b of the cylinder B. Around the cylinder B, Withinthe lamp-chimney, is a metallic washer D. This washer is composed of thin malleable metal to conform with the inner surface of the lamp-chimney. Between the washer D and the flange 1) I place springsE to maintain frictional contact of the washer D and the collar 0 with the lamp-chimney and at the same time allow of expansion and contraction of said chimney without liability of breaking the same. Normally closing the opening through the collar 0 is a swinging shutter F, which is pivoted to a lug c of the collar C by means of a rivetf. This shutter is normally maintained in closed position, as illustrated by Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, and it is provided with a handle or knob g to be used as a means for opening and closing it.
The aperture Ct through the lamp-chimney is of a diameter greater than the diameter of the cylinder B to admit of expansion and contraction of the several parts of the device without liability of breaking the chimney, and the springs E normally maintain this opening in a closed condition.
In the modification illustrated by Fig. 4 of the drawings the inner cylinder B interiorly carries sliding spring-rods arranged on a longitudinal plane and having angular ends which extend through slots 1) in the wall of the cylinder and engage annular projections 0 upon the inner surface of the outer cylinder 0 for the purpose of drawing and locking the two cylinders together, the said rods being encircled by spiral springs E, operating between the washer and angular ends of the rods to admit of expansion and contraction of the assembled parts, said rods passing through the washer and being further provided with limiting heads or stops engaging the inner face of the washer.
In the operation and use of the device when it is desired to light the lamp it is simply necessary to swing the shutter into the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The lighted match can then be inserted through the cylinder B tothe lamp-wick, after which the shutter is closed, and it is normally maintained in closed position by gravity and frictional contact with the outer surface of the collar 0.
I do not confine myself to the specificdetails of mere mechanical construction as herein shown and described, as itis obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to slight structural variations.
Having thus described my said invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. As a lighting attachment for lamps, the combination with a lamp-chimney having a hole or opening leading therethrough, a cylinder engaging said opening, a collar mounted around said cylinder, and spring devices for maintaining the cylinder and collar in normal position with respect to said opening, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a lamplighting attachment, the combination with a lamp-chimney having a hole or opening leading through the side thereof, of a cylinder engaging said opening, and a collar surrounding the outer portion of said cylinder, spring devices for maintaining the cylinder and collar in normal position with respect to said opening, and a shutter carried by the collar, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lamp-chimney having a hole or opening leading through the side thereof, of a cylinder engaging said opening,
.an outer collar surrounding said cylinder, ex-
pansion devices for maintaining said cylinder in the opening and permitting a sliding movement therein, and a swinging shutter secured toand normally closing said collar, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lamp-chimney having a hole or opening, a flanged cylinder engaging said opening, a collar mounted around the outer end of said cylinder, a swinging shutter pivoted to said collar, a malleable washer surrounding the said cylinder and springs located between the said washer and the flange of the cylinder to clamp the device upon a lamp-chimney, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of May, 1899.
