SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,652, dated. February 6, 1900.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK S. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Holly, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Toy Rein, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in toy reins.

The object of the present invention is toiinprove the construction of toy reins and to provide an ornamental one which may be economically constructed of leather or other suitable material by using small scraps resulting from the manufacture of other' articles.

The invention consists in t-he construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View, partly in section, of a pair of toy reins constructed in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view of the central connecting portion of the reins. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views of the reins.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates a exible chain forming the reins and connected near one end ofthe device by a transverse breast portion 2, consisting of short chains 3, centrally secured together, crossing each other, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and provided at their ends with loops 4, which receive the chain 1. The chain 1 is adapted to be arranged on the shoulders of a child, with the connecting portion 2 extending across the breast of the same, and the loops 4 are adapted to slide freely on the sides of the chain to vary the size of the portion passing over the shoulders of the child, so that the toy may be readily adjusted to fit the wearer comfortably. The loops 4 are preferably secured to the ends of the short chains 3 by shanks or fastening devices 5 of bells 6, and rosettes 7, of leather or other suitable material, are arranged beneath the bells and are secured to the loops by the fastening devices 5. The connecting breast portion 2 is preferably provided with a central rosette 8 and bell 9, which has a shank or fastening device the registering openings and folded like the Y first, and other links are added until the chain is completed, and the end links of the chain are united by a rivet 13, which connects the terminals of a ribbon or strip 14.

The ribbon or strip 14, which is continuous and which is designed to be of a dierent shade or color from the links of the chain to present an ornamental appearance, is laced or roved back and forth through the registering openings, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4

' of the accompanying drawings. The end links of the chain are brought together, With the folded portion of one of the links between the sides of the other link, and the-terminals of the ribbon or strip 14 are overlapped and secured together by the rivet 13 or other suitable fastening device, which passes through the links and the strip or ribbon.

It will be seen that the toy reins, which present an ornamental and attractive appearance, have their strength increased by the ornamental strip or ribbon which is rove through the registering openings of the links and that the latter may be economically constructed of scraps of leather or other iiexible material.

Changes in the form, proportion, size, and

-the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the advantages of this invention.

What is claimed is- 1. .A device of the class described comprising a chain having links consisting of strips of flexible material folded and provided at their ends with registering openings, the bend of each link being linked into the openings of the adjacent link and a strip or ribbon rove through the openings, and a connecting breast portion provided with loops receivingthe said chain, substantially as described.

A device of the class described comprising a chain having links consisting of strips of flexible material folded and provided at their ends with registering openings, the bend of each link being linked into the openings of the adjacent link, a strip or ribbon rove through its links, an da connecting breast portion consisting of short chains crossed and centrally secured together and provided at their terminals with loops receiving the said ch ain, substantially as described.

A device of the class described comprising a chain composed of interlaced links each consisting of a piece of flexible material centrally folded and having enlarged ends providedwith registering openings, the bend of each link being linked into the registering openings of the adjacent link, and a flexible strip or ribbon rove through the openings of the links after the chain proper has been completed and being of a contrasting color and adapted to be removed and replaced Without destroying the chain, and a connecting breast portion consisting of short crossed chains, loops arranged at the ends of the short chains and receiving the other chains, and the bells having Shanks securing the loops to the ends of the short chains and centrally connecting the latter, substantially as described.
