UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL N. LONG, OF HARWICH, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAS-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,618, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed June 12, 1899.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL N. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Har- Wich, in the county of Barnstable and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gasvalves and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the gas-valve. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line a: m in Fig. 1.
A is the casing of the valve, provided with gas-passages a and screw-threaded end portions or nipples of approved construction.
B is the plug-valve, which is journaled in the casing and which has a gas-passage b, which connects the passages a when the valve is open and disconnects them when the valve is closed.
0 is a cylindrical extension at the top of the casing around the plug. This extension has a notch c in one side of it. D is aprojecting boss on one side of the casing A.
E is a plate or disk which is secured to the top of the plug B and provided with a curved slot 6, a finger-piece or projection e, and two pins f on its lower side near its periphery.
G is a spiral spring the outer end of which engages with the pins f and has its inner end hooked into the notch 0.
Serial No. 720,260. (No modelh This springnormally holds the plug in the closed position.
H is a thumb-screw which passes through the slot 6 and engages with the boss D.
The valve is opened to any required extent by moving the disk in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, and the thumb-screw is then screwed up, so as to hold the plug from being moved backward by the spring. hen the thumb-screw is unscrewed, the spring closes the valve automatically.
What I claim is 1. In a gas-valve, the combination, with a valve-casing, and a plugvalve journaled therein; of a plate secured to the plug-valve and provided with a slot, a spring connected to the said plate and casing and operating to close the valve, and a thumb-screw passing through the said slot and connected with the casing, substantially as set forth.
2. In a gas-valve, the combination, with a valve-casin g provided with a boss on one side and a cylindrical extension at its top having a notch in one side of it, and a plug-valve journaled in the said casing; of a plate secured to the plug-valve and provided with a slot, a spring connected to the said plate and casing and operating to close the valve, and a thumb-screw passing through the said slot and engaging with the said boss on the casin g, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL N. LONG.
