NITED- STATES PATENT OFFicE.
ELISI'IA C. MATHEWS, OF JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS.
ANCHOR FOR FENCE-POSTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,470, dated January 30, 1900. Application filed June 19, 1899. Serial No. 721,124. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELISHA C. MATHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at J acksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders or Supports for Fence- Posts, of which the following is a speci flcation.
This invention relates to an improved holder or support for metallic fence-posts, and has for one object to provide a cheap and durable structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder or support for a metallic fencepost made of a single piece of metal and having its ends secured to the post and arranged eccentrically thereto.
Another object of this invention is to provide a means for preventing the post from turning or being displaced after once positioned, this being accomplished by the arrangement of the holder or support eccentric to the post and a flange of the latter projecting outwardly from the circumferential plane of the support.
Many other objects will be hereinafter referred to, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View illus trating the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a View of a modification, and Fig. 4 is a crosssection of the same.
The same numerals refer to like parts in all the figures.
1 indicates a post having flanges 2, 3, and 4. At a point preferably where the post enters the ground is located a support or holder 5, made of a single piece of metal and having 7 its ends 6 riveted to the flanges 3 and 4 by rivets or other well-known means, as shown at 7.
In the modified form of support and post shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the post 8 is made V shape in cross-section. Likewise the holder 9 is approximately V shape at its outer end. The inner ends are drawn toward each other and are riveted to the flanges of the post 8.
It is thought the operation and advantagesof the improvement will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The post is placed in the ground in the usual manner, and the support or holder can or cannot be entirely submerged. The earth is jammed or packed around the post, also within the hollow portion of the support or holder 5. It will be noted that the flange 2 projects in an opposite direction from the base 5 with relation to the post, said flange forming a protuberance from the circumferential outline of the base of the holder, which, together with the position of the latter and the flanges 3 and 4, absolutely prevents the post being displaced.
I am aware of various forms of supports or holders for posts applied at approximately the same position as the one herein described. However, I am not aware of a structure showing the base or holder disposed eccentrically with relation to the body of the post formed of one piece and bent so as to have its ends secured to the flanges of the post proper. By this arrangement the post is maintained in the desired position and strengthened at the point where it usually rusts and frequently breaks not only from the elements, but by reason of the strain of the fence.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the principle hereinbefore explained is substantially the same, except that the flange 2 is omitted and the configuration of the base or holder is slightly changed. As a matter of fact the configuration can be changed Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. While the structure as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is not as strong and durable as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it is preferable where the strain and pull on the post is comparatively small.
I may sometimes use a bottom to the base or holder and form a receptacle for a weight. However, this is only one of the many minor changes which I desire to reserve the right to make.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a metallic post provided with angular flanges, and a hollow anchor formed of a single piece, having its converging ends riveted to the flanges of the post, forming substantially a closed receptaole below the ground.
2. In a metallic post, the combination with the angular flanges thereof, a circular base In testimony whereof I have hereunto set or support made of a single piece and bent my hand in the presence of two subscribing so as to have its ends riveted to two of the witnesses.
angular flanges of the post, and a third flange ELISHA C. MATHEWS. 5 projecting from the two aforesaid flanges and Witnesses:
out of the plane of the circumferential line of CHARLES A. BARNES,
the base orsupport, substantially as set forth. LENA O. ENGEL.
