To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HENRY MARTIN and JOHN HARGREAVES MARTIN, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Burnley, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Means for Carrying Off Impure Steam or Fumes Arising from Yarn-Sizing Apparatus and other Machinery, of which the following is a specification thereof.

- This invention relates especially to what are known as tape-sizing machines, but is also applicable to other sizing-machines or to machines wherein a trunk is employed to carry off impure steam or other moisture or fumes arising from materials under treatment,'by which a deposit of dirt is caused to be formed or collect on the inner sides of the trunk. It is of frequent occurrence for dirt to accumulate in the trunk to such an extent that any vibration will cause the dirt to be dislodged from said trunk and in the case of a tapesizing machine cause much damage to the rollers and material. We avoid this by our invention, which we hereinafter describe, reference being made to the accompanying two sheets of drawings, in which Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a side view of a portion of the trunk with our invention applied and shown in relative position with the yarn-rollers g. Fig. 2 is asectional view of the front of a portion of the said trunk. On Sheet 2 Fig. 3 is a plan, Fig. 4 an end view, and Fig. 5 a transverse section, of a trough with grid constituting our invention. Fig. 6 is a side view of a part of the trough, showing the application of a modified form of our invention.

In the views similar letters refer to similar parts.

In this invention we fit to the mouth of a trunk, as (1, (represented in Figs. 1 and 2,) an angular grid, formed by a series of bars, as b. The lower ends of the said bars are attached to or rest on or in the hollow of a trough, as d. We form the trough d of any light noncorrosive sheet metal, with the edges (1 bent over and wired, and an outlet (1 at any convenient part for the condensed vapor to pass therefrom. The grid is formed either of wires or of V-shaped bars that may be produced by pressing or stamping from sheet metal or of bars of other preferred form. The grid b may be separate fromthe trough or may be coinbined with and united thereto. -Whenthe grid is constructed separately from the trough, the ends of the wires or barsforming the grid are united to metallic strips, as c, Fig. 3.

In a modification of our invention we form the grid so as to rest on or in one channel only of the trough d and rising angularly within the trunk, as shown in Fig. 6. By these means any deposit of dirt that is formed within the trunk and beads of water produced by condensation are conducted into the trough.

In order to obtain access for the purpose of clearing the deposit that may have collected in the troughs or in the grids, we secure the troughs to the trunks by means of strap hinges, as e, or an equivalent.

We prefer to employ grids that are constructed of wires or bars, as hereinbefore described; but other forms of grids maybe employed in like manner without departing from our invention.

We claim as our invention- 1. As a means for carrying off impure steam or other moisture or fumes arising from materials under treatment in tape-sizing or like machines, the combination of a trunk having a trough, as at d, with an angular grid in the trunk and resting in the channel of the said trough, substantially as described.

. 2. As a means of carrying 01f impure steam or other moisture or fumes arising from materials under treatment in tape-sizing or like machines, the combination of a trunk with a trough removably secured to the trunk and a grid applied thereto, substantially as described.
