Application filed March 3,1899. Serial No. 707,651. (N0 model-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seal-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, economical, and efficient seal-lock; and the invention consists in the features, combinations, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved seal-lock looking at it in open condition; Fig. 2, an end view of the same, showing the lock in condition to receive afrangible sealing-tablet Fig. 3, a side elevation, partly in section, showing the lock in its locked condition; Fig. 4, an end view of the lock in its locked condition looking at it from the reverse side, and Fig. 5 a perspective view of one of the frangible tablets used for the purpose of sealing the look.
In constructing a lock in accordance with my improvements I make a main frame portion, which consists of a plate A and a tubular extension B, preferably formed in one integral part. To the frame portion I pivotally secure a U-shaped locking bolt or shackle O, which is adapted to be passed through a staple on a railway-car and lock the hasp thereon, so as to prevent the opening of the cardoor.
To lock the shackle and frame portion together, I provide a sealing-bolt, which is made in two parts'a dead bOlt D and a livebolt .Dtelescopically fitted together, as shown particularly in Fig. 3. The live-bolt has a beveled projecting portion d, adapted to engage with a notch or recess 0 in the U shaped shackle. A coil-springd surrounds the dead-bolt of the sealing bolt and is interposed between the frame portion and the shell or tubular part of the live-bolt, (see Fig. 3,) sothat the live-bolt is held yieldingly in position and may be moved backward without affecting the dead-bolt while the shackle and frame portion are forming an engagement and after a frangible seal has been placed in position, as will be more fully hereinafter described. The dead-bolt is provided with a projecting frame-piece E,which can be screw threaded thereon or otherwise secured thereto and passed through a slot d in the livebolt, so that when the dead-bolt is operated upwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, the live-bolt is also withdrawn from engagement with the locking-bolt and enables such shackle to be turned on its pivot and removed from engagement with the staple.
To seal the lock, the plate portion A is provided with a number of upwardly and inwardly bent lugs a and the shackle with an integral projecting lug c. When the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a frangible seal G, as shown in Fig. 5, is placed in position from the side shown in Fig. 2. The shackle is then swung int-o locking position and moves the live sealing-bolt without operating the dead-bolt. The lock is now sealed and cannot be opened without brealo iug the seal.
In order to open the lock, the dead-bolt must be pushed upwardly, (See Fig. 3,) which action breaks the frangible seal and permits the live-bolt to be operated so that the shackle may be opened.
WVhile I- have described my invention with more or less minuteness as regards details of construction and arrangement and as being embodied in certain precise forms, I do not desire to be limited thereto unduly or any more than is pointed out in the claims. On the contrary, I contemplate all proper changes in form, construction, and arrangement, the omission of immaterial elements and the substitution of equivalents,as circumstances may suggest or necessity render expedient.
I claim 1. In a seal-l0ck, the combination of a frame, a shackle, a frangible seal or similar element secured in place on the frame, and a divided sealing-bolt, one part engaging and locking the shackle and frame together and the other part contacting the seal so that the lock cannot be opened after the frangible seal is in engagement without breaking or disruption of the seal, substantially as described.
2. In aseal-lock,the combination of a frame, a shackle movably secured thereto, a frangible seal held and retained in position on the frame, and a divided sealing-bolt, one part engaging and locking the shackle and frame together after the seal has been placed in position and the other part engaging the seal so that the parts cannot be disengaged without breaking the seal, substantially as described.
3. In a seal-lock,the combination of a frame portion provided with a flat plate or similar element adapted to receive and hold a frangible seal in position, a shackle pivotally secured to the frame portion, and a telescopic sealing-bolt arranged in the frame portion adjacent to the seal-holder and arranged to lock the shackle and frame portion together after a seal has been placed in position and prevent such parts from being unlocked until after the seal has been broken, substantially as described.
4. In aseal-lock,the combination of a frame portion provided with a fiat plate or similar element having an upwardly and inwardly bent portion adapted to hold a frangible seal in position, a tubular extension secured to the plate, a shackle provided with a projecting lug adjacent to the plate and adapted when the parts are in their locked position to prevent the frangible seal from being withdrawn from such position, and a telescopic sealing-bolt made in two parts yieldingly secured together, one part arranged to lock the shackle and tubular extension of the frame together and the other to break the frangible seal and unlock the parts, substantially as described.
5. In a seal-lock,the combination of a frame portion provided with a flat plate or similar element having upwardly and inwardly bent lugs adapted to hold a frangible seal in position, a tubular extension secured to the plate, a shackle provided with a projecting lug adjacent to the table and adapted when the parts are in their locked position to prevent the frangible seal from being Withdrawn from such position, a telescopic sealing-bolt in the tubular extension and made in two parts yieldingly secured together, one part arranged to lock the shackle and tubular extension of the frame together and the other to break the frangible sealand unlock the parts, and a projection on one portion of the telescopic sealing-bolt to operate the same, substantially as described.
