Description

No. 642,324. Patented Jan. 30, I900. G. H. HARVEY.
PIPE THREAD PROTECTOR.
(Application filed Aug. 1, 1898.!
(No Model.)
WITNESSES: l/VI/E/VTOR GEORGE ll. HARVEY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL TUBE COMPANY, OF NEW JERSEY.
PIPE-THREAD PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,324, dated January 30, 1900.
Application filed August 1, 1898.
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoReE I-I. HARVEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Pittsburg, county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to couplers or threadprotectors for rods or pipes, having special use as thread-protectors to engage with the threads of pipes or bars and protect the same from injury in handling or transportation, its object being to provide a cheap coupling or protector suitable for use with the larger sizes of pipe and which can be produced at reasonable cost.
It consists, essentially, in a coupler or thread-protector having a series of ribs on its inner face, placed at equal distances apart, and having screw-threads on the upper edges of such ribs.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvention, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which-,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a strip from which the protectors are to be formed. Fig. 2 is an end view showing the same bent into annular form. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the same threads formed on the inner face of the ribs.
In said drawings, 1 is the flat strip of metal, having the ribs 2 formed on one face thereof, these ribs being placed at practically equal distances apart and having open spaces 3 between the ribs. Such rolled strip is bent into annular form, as shown in Fig. 2, its ends being connected together in any suitable way, the ring or annulus soproduced being thread- Serlal No. 687,405. (No model.)
ed in any suitable machine. The threadingdies engage only with the faces of the ribs 2, cutting the threads 4 on the same, as shown in Fig. 3, the open spaces 3 between the ribs reducing materially the cost of tapping by reducing the surface to be tapped, while such open spaces allow the taps to cool during the cutting of the thread and so extend their life. The coupling or protector so produced engages with the threads of the pipe or bar at short intervals and so forms a strong and rigid coupling or protector, though of lightweight, because of the ribs formed on the body, which provide for the bracing of the same and make it possible to form such body of lightweight, while the threads are out only upon the ribs which engage at intervals with the threads of the pipe or bar and through the same, as Well as the bodies of the ribs, give the necessary bracing.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A coupler or thread-protector formed with an annular body portion having a series of ribs on its inner face set at substantially equal distances, the faces of said ribs being tapped to form screw-threads, substantially as set forth.
2. A coupler or thread-protector formed with an annular body portion having a series of ribs on its inner face, said ribs having screwthreads formed thereon, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, this 30th day of July, 1898.
GEO. H. HARVEY.
