Description

IPATBNTED JAN 20, 1903.

STOVEPIPE; I APPLICATION IIHLED 001 .3, 1902.
H0 MODEL.
0., wAswNc-TouJ. A
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER M. BUBB, OF ELLWOOD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
STOVEPIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,599, dated January 20, 1903. Application filed October 3, 1902. Serial No.'125,818. (No model.)
has for its object to provide simple and inexpensive Stovepipe-sections of such construction that they are adapted to be expeditiously connected without the employment of auxiliary appurtenances and as readily disconnected when desired, and this without liability of their becoming casually disconnected while in use.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a section taken in the plane indicated by the broken line 1 1 of Fig. 2 and illustrating two of my improved Stovepipesections as connected together. Fig. 2 is-a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 comprises enlarged disconnected perspective viewsof the complementary ends of two sections.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which- A A are stovepipe-sections, of sheet metal, connected in accordance with my invention, and B is my improved stovepipe-joint. Each of the sections A is provided at one end with integral spring-clips (1, having inturned lips or flanges b, and adjacent to its opposite end, which is reduced in diameter, as indicated by c, with a circumferential groove d.
In order to make my improved joint B, it is simply necessary to insert the reduced end 0 of one pipe-section A between the flanges b of the clips a on a complementary section A until the said flanges 1) spring into the groove (1 of the first-mentioned section A. With this done the sections will be connected in such manner that there is absolutely no liability of their becoming casually disconnected incident to the usage to which stovepipes are ordinarily subjected. When, however, it is desired to disconnect the sections, the same may be readily accomplished by simply pulling or prying the flanges 6 out of the groove (1 and slipping the sections apart.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that notwithstanding their advantages my improved Stovepipe-sections are very simple and inexpensive, and may, therefore, be produced almost, if not quite, as cheaply as the ordinary Stovepipe-sections at present in use. It will also be appreciated that elbow stovepipe-sections may be constructed in accordance with my invention, as well as straight sections.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a stovepipe-joint, the combination of a sheet-metal pipe-section having a reduced end 0, and a circumferential groove d adjacent to the same, a second sheet-metal pipesection receiving the reduced end of the firstmentioned section, and spring-clips formed integral with and extending from one end of the second-mentioned section, and having inturned flanges removably arranged in the groove d of the first-mentioned section.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a sheet-metal Stovepipe-section, reduced in diameter at one end, and having a circumferential groove adjacent to said end, and also having integral, spring-clips at its opposite end, provided with inturned lips or flanges.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLIVER M. BUBB.
