Description
@eine germi @fitte IMBROVEMENT IN MEANS FOR OPERATING THE TREADLES AND HARNESS-SHAFTS OF LOOMS.
ilje rlgrhule munt un tlgese ntu's ntrut mit making part nf tige same.
'IO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Beit known that I, OLIYERW. GORDON, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry, and State of Iowa, have Iinvented a new and useful Improvement in Looms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a, full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a. vertical longitudinal section; and
Figure Seis a vertical transverse section.
The same letters in all the figures are used in the indication of identical parts.
My invention relates to the mode of operating the treadles and harness-shafts vof a. loom, so that they are positively actuated both in ascending and descending, by means of the following-described devices:
Ani are the treadles. These are formed by a rectangular frame, formed as shown in g. 2. The treadles are attached to' the frame of the loom D by a bent strap or hinge, A', which allows them a free vertical oscillationtothe extent that is necessary to operate the harness shafts. B is a shaft passing across the frame of the loom below the harness, and between the projecting ends of the treadles. Rows of holes are Vbored in the shaft to receive the pins B', which are so disposed in pairs that one shall strike against the upper part of the frame, and in revolving raise the treadles, and the other in like manner strike against the lower part of the frame, and force down the treadles. To this end the upper and lower parts of the treadles are not in the same vertical plane, but they nre so arranged that the vertical plane which touches the righthan l side of one shall touch the left-hand side of the other. There are four sets of holes, corresponding with the number of treadles, and double the number of pins, as two pins are employed in actuating each of the treadles. As these rows of holes are so arranged that the tappcts B may be made to operate the treadlcs when in either row, a great variety may be given to the fabrics to be woven. The harness-shafts C are connected with the treadles by the harness-supports C. They are placed between the guides E, which are formed with flanges on their edges to prevent the harnessshafts from becoming displaced.
What I claim herein as new, and of lny invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the harness-frames C, and their supporting rods, with the hinged tren-(Iles A, the tappet-shaft B, and adjustable tappets B', the whole constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l
2. The combination of the hinged trcadlcs A, actuated positively, both in ascending and descending, by the adjustable tappets B', projecting from the tappet-shaft B, with the harness-frame C, and the encbguides E, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to thisvspccificati'o-n in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLIVER W. GORDON.
