INVENTORS I wnNEssEs: f

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVEB W. GORDON AND NATHAN T. FRMB, 0F SALEM, lUWA.
IMPRovsMl-:Nr IN Looms.Y
.To all trimm it may omwem:
Bc it known that we, OLIVER W. GonnoN and NM'HAN T. FRAME. of Salem,in thecounty of Henry and State rot';lowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand and Power Looms; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ol' the same, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, made a part of this specitlcation, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical projection. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one of the cases in a plane parallel with the harnessframe on the line :c .'r, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section through the interior ofthe loom, showing au elevation of the inner face of the casing. Fig. 4 is a view ot the end-ot' one of the harness-frames.
The same letters refer to identical parts.
. A is the trame supporting the machinery of the loom. To this frame are atLached the cases B, inclosing thc ends of the harness-frames and the cylinder for actuating thc same. C is the hatten, ot' Ordin-.ry construction.
The picker-steil' 'l' is pivotcd' to the middle of the breast-beam, and to this picker-sta` the hook formed drivers l) are attached bym leathern hinge. Below the drivers plays the picker-stati E, around thc cylindrical base of which the leathern hinge of the drivers passes. This hinge is attached in the middle to'the base of the picker-stati'. The drivers D nre hooked upon their interior faces, and are held together at their points by an india-rubber elastic band. The hooks catch upon a pin passing through a slot in the betten, alternately, as the hatten is thrown back, and by its forward movement they actnatc the picker-stati and communicate motion tov the shuttle. In employing the term forward we mean toindicate motion from the breast-beam toward the loom. 1
To the two ends of the handrnil of the batten are attached, at the junction with thesword of thc hatten, cords or straps I, passing over ulleys in the casing und attached to a lever,
as shown in Fig. 2. This lever moves freely bya collar on the cylinder-gudgeon and carries adog working upon u. ratchet keyed to the cylinder. When this cord I is raised by the motion of thc hatten toward thc breast-bcam it raises the lever, and by the action ofthe dog upon the ratchet H communicates a. quarterrcvolution to the cylinder. When the hatten returns in the other direction theleveris drawn down hy thc action of a spring, K, and, moving mi its collar freely. does not move the cylinder.
F is a cylinder the axis of which is at right angles with the plane ot' the. h.'1rnc'ss-al|at'ts,y
having on its surface eight holcsdrilled in each of four rows, the rows being made atdistances of ninety degrees from one another. These holes are made to receive four pins in each row, to be adjusted according to the pattern to be worked, and at each revolution these pins give upward or downward motion to the harnessshafts, as may be desired. The pins that give upward motion do not give downward motion, and vice versa. l
L are guides to the harness-shafts, so conningtheshafts thatthe pins will always strike them as desired.
G are the harnessshafts, the upper and lower longitudinal parts ot' which areframed together by cross-pieces, as shown in Fig. 4. These cross-pieces g are made of double the thickness ofthe parts g'g",and the parts g' and g" are halved onto the extremities of the cross-piece g on different sides of the cross-piece, so that the part g'tshall not be directly over the part g', but so disposed as that the piu, which iu ascending shall strike the part g", shall, indescendiu g, not strike the part g', and vice versa, the eect ot' which arrangement is to communicate a positive motion to the harness-frame both in ascending and descending. Both ends gI and g" of the horizontal parts ofthe harnessshafts project a sncicnt distance beyond the nprigbts g to receive between them *and be acted'npon by the pins of the pattern-cylinder.
Vie have described the portions peculiar to our loom. The other portions of the working mechanism are such as are commonly employed for the respective purposes in other looms.
'e do not claim simply raising both ends of the harness-frames by positive action by means ot' lifting cylinders or cams at both ends of the rame,1`or the harness-frames are raised by a positive action in a great variety of waysV in all looms. Our improvements consist in lowering the harness-frames hy a positive eo tion similar to that by which they were raised.
Having now fully explained the construction and operation of our improvements in looms,
vhat we claim as onr invention, and seek to secnre by Letters Patent, ic-
1. A device for com mnnicatng motion from the-hatten C to the picker-atan' E, withont the nseofanxilinrypnlleys. by meansof the drivers D and exible' hinge, snhstantiallyas set fort-h. 2. Constructing the harness-shafts G with their uprights g and projecting ends g g", ns and for the purposes set forth.
3. Raising and lowering both ends of the harness-shafts simultaneously by n positive action, substantially ns and l'or the purpose oet forth.
y The cylinders F, so arranged as that their axes shall be ni:v right angles with the planes of the harness-allaite, and by means of pins thereon giving a positive motion, both ascending and descending, to the harness-shafts.
5. The combination ot' the hatten C, the cord I, lever, and ratchet H with the cylinder F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The removable guides L, in combination with the harness-shafts G. having eyes, or'tbeir equivalents, for such guides, construct and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The arrangement ot' the cases B, and the pawl and lever X, and ratchet H,cylinder and ha mess-shafts, constructed and combined substantinllr, as set forth. In testimony whereof We have signed our names lo thisI :specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
