To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HERMAN GUNTNER and ARTHUR A. ROBERTS, citizens of the United States, residing at .Vellsburg, in the county of Brooke and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Rollers and Clamps Not Requiring the Use of Tacks in Fastening the Shade Material to the Roller; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention is an improvement in that class of curtain-rollers which are provided with a lengthwise groove and with clasps or other equivalent devices for securing the curtain proper in such groove.
Our invention is embodied in the arrangement of the groove transversely relative to the periphery of the roller and in the corresponding angle of the lips or flanges of the spring curtain-clasps, whereby said flanges are adapted to enter and secure the curtain in the groove, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a roller and a shade or curtain secured thereto according to our improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the shade-elamps. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the roller.
The cylindrical roller a is provided with a longitudinal groove2, whose transverse direction is at a right angle to a radius of the roller. In other words, the groove is 011 the line of a chord of the circle of the roller and tangential to an innercircle which is concentric with the periphery of the roller.
The clamps 3 are formed of spring metal and curved conformably to the roller. An
inwardly-projecting flange or lip 4; is formed on one edge of the clamps and arranged at an acute angle, so that when the clamps are applied to the roller, as shown in Fig. 1, the lip l lies in the groove 2 and has the same direction. The length of the clamps 3 is such that they extend fully and preferably more than half-way around the roller, whereby they are adapted to clasp and retain their hold upon the latter until detached by raising their free ends.
A shade or curtain 5 is detachably secured to the roller by laying one end over the groove 2 and then pressing the lips 4 of the clamps against the same and forcing the latter onto the roller, whereby the lips carry the shade into the groove, as shown in Fig. 1, and the clamp clasps the roller closely. It will be seen that by the arrangement of the groove 2 and the construction and application of the spring-clamps 3 the shade 5 is so held that when tension is applied to it in unrolling the strain comes on the clamp-lips 4, so as to cause them to bear against the side of the groove 2, and detachment by that means will not occur. In fact, a pull on the shade 5 tightens the hold of the clamps 3 on the roller 1 instead of tending to loosen them, as would be the result if the clamp were arranged as usual heretofore.
What we claim is- The improved curtain roller fastening formed by the combination with a roller havin g a lengthwise groove,arranged tangentially to an inner circle which is concentric with the circumference of the roller, of a series of spring-metal clamps, which are made of such length as to embrace more than half the roller circumferentially, and provided at one end with an inturned and acute-angle lip, or flange, adapted to conform to the angle of said groove and to fit loosely therein, so as to secure the curtain, as specified.
