IMPROVEMENT IN VALVE-GEAR FOR WATER-METERS AND OTHER PURPOSES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MY CONOERN: I
Be it known that l', JOHN H. RHODES, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on the Valve-Gear of Water-Meters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference boing had tothe accompanying drawing, forming part of this' specification, and which represents a sectional view of a valve-gear constructed according to my improvement.
My improvement has reference to an ordinary or welhknown description of valve-gear for operation in connection with water-meters of the reciprocating kind, and in which an abrupt motion is required to be given to the valve at the close of either stroke; and the nature of' my invention consists in a novel construction or gear of the levers, which, though intermediate or indirect appliances, are the main devices in connection with certain springs for shooting or suddenly operating or changing the action of the valve as said levers, by the working of the meter, are brought to pass 0r cross a culminating line.` v
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents the basefplate of the valvefgear; BV the slotted toe-lever, having its fulcrum as at a, for operating the valve or valves, and worked by an arm, C, in gear therewith, bung on a shaft, D, and having double inclines, b c, which, accordingly astheyl are acted upon by a. culminating lever, E, change the position of the valve. This lever E is operated by means -of a double-cammed lever, F, which is connected by a rod, G, with the diaphragm or other reciprocating portion ofthe meter. H is the thrust-lever or rod provided with a roller, d, and in gear with the culminating lever, E, also attached at its opposite or rear end lto a shaft, I, which is carried by a rocking-arm, J, andhas connectedwith it vthe usual springs K, that as the lever E and rod H reach or commence to pass the culminating line, which is when these devices are in the position represented by red lines, suddenly shoot or throw the several parts'or levers that communicate the requisite motion to the toe-lever B for changingthe position'o' the valve or valves.v About this action, and the general arrangement of devices making up the valve-gearl here represented, there 'is in the abstract or main principle no essential diiference between such and the devices in ordinary' use for the same' purpose, butin such previous valvefgears the connection of the culminating lever E and thrust-lever H has been of so imperfect a character, with such, at certain points, undue or severe strain on the pinf, with which the levenE is linked to the rod H as not unfrequeatly to produce cutting of said pin and injury or breakage. This defect I obviate by causing said pi'nf, which is attached to the rod H, to'pass through an oval or oblong slot, Zz, in the lever E, and make the` outer end z' of thelatter of an arched or semi-oval -form for action on or against the roller d of the rod H. By'this construction and gear of these parts, .the pinfis relieved from-that severe or cutting strain to which itnecessarily is subjected when arranged to fit through a cylindrical hole in the lever E, and the outer end z' ot' the latterl of a different contour. Here, that is in my improvement,l said end is of a shape which not only secures a rapid or free clearance when the lever E and rod H pas; the culminating line, but has or may have a constant bearing on or against the roller d, thus avoiding injurious slamming of the surfaces, and which improved action or effect is incidental ity were to the slotted gear of the lever E, with the rod H,'by which also the pin is protected from being cut and strain thrown on the outer end of' the lever E and roller Z of the rod H.' l I What I here claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a valve-gear substantially of the character described, the combination with the rod H, and its roller d, of the lever E, linked as described to said rod by a pin,f, arranged to pass through an oblong or oval slot in the lever, and the latter constructed at its outer end z' for gear with the roller d, substantially as specified.
JOHN H. RHODES.
