Be it known that I, REoToR M. THOMPSON, of Brnmley, county of Miller, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon -Standards, of

which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part hereof.

This invention relates to improvements in IQ a wagon-standard; and it consists in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.

The object of this invention is to construct a standard all of iron or steel and which is with.

Another object is by the use of said invention the iron band which is placed around the bolster is also entirely dispensed with, and it may be removed or taken off in a few'min- 2 5 utes, which is very necessaryin hauling logs on farm-wagons. Itis cheap and quickly applied.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention Fig. 2 is an end View of my device viewing said perspective view from the left. In the drawings, 1 indicates a bolster of a farm or other wagon, and to this is applied 4,0 my newly-invented standard 2, which consists of a band 3, of iron or steel, suitably bent to form an upright, shaped as shown in the drawings, which is thepreferable form. This band 3 is provided at its bottom ends 4 with holes or bores which communicate with a like bore formed in the bolster, and through these bores is passed a bolt 5, tightened by a nut 6, holding said standard to the bolster 1. Through the band 3, at aboutits mid- ;o dle, is a pin 7, which passes through the entire width of said standard and is preferably the means of said brace the standard is firmly braced and supported. In the upper sides of said band 3 are provided bores 12. In these are inserted and supported loops 13, which are preferably made of spring-steel, and the ends 14 of said loops 13 are suitably bent and formed round, so as to smoothly operate in the bores 12. The loops being of spring-steel, they areinserted in their position in the standard by pressing the ends together and placing said ends in the standard, and by releasing the pressure the spring of the material will force the ends 14 into the bores 12.

The loops 13 are for the purpose of carrying and supporting a stake or extension bar which is used on various occasions for extending the height of the wagon by adding additional side-boards and also when the body is entirely removed, so that lumber may be hauled.

With this standard as constructed I save considerable amount of labor in applying it over the old construction and it is valuable in the matter of convenience. The old style is formed of wood and has at its base a tenon which fits into a mortise formed in the bolster. It is bounded by iron bands and is se curely fixed in said mortise never to be re moved. The mortise in the bolster is of such size that it weakens it more or less, while with my device a hole is merely bored and by means of a bolt the standard is securely held thereto.

By this form of standard any size wagon body may be placed on the gearing, as the standards can be placed at any location on the bolster by adding additional holes for the insertion of the bolts.

This invention has its advantage over the present form because it is all constructed of metal, has no tenon to rot, it needs no iron band to be placed around the end of the bolster to prevent it from splitting, and can In this end isbe set any place upon the bolster. It can be taken off in a few minutes, which is very necessary in hauling logs, especially on farmwagons.

I do not desire to limit myself to iron or steel nor to the precise construction of standard, as I may find other material that can be used and worked in like manner and may find a different design in which to build it.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. In a wagonstandard, a standard constructed to be applied to the sides of the bolster and held thereto by a bolt a brace secured to a pin passed through the standard, said brace secured to the top of said bolster by a bolt, rigidly bracing said standard, metallic loops provided with turned ends held in apertures formed in said standard, said loops for the purpose to carry an extension rod or stake, substantially as shown and for the purto be removed at Will, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
