WAGON-BOX BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,751, dated April 27, 1886.
Application filed December 19, 1885. Serial No. 186,197.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATT. F. ALLEN, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vagon-Box Braces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to improvements in double-legged strap-braces for wagonboXes, whereby the sides and bottom of the box are more firmly held together; also, said sides are braced, kept straight, and the timber composing them prevented from warping, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents a broken side view of a Wagon-box, in part, with my invention applied; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same upon the line at w in Fig. 1.
A indicates one of the sides of a wagon box or bed; B, its bottom; 0, the usual bottom bars, and D the foot-board.
EE are the strap-braces, each of which is of similar construction. Each of these braces E is in the form of a strap bent to pass over the top of the box-side A, and having its two legs a a made to bear on or against the outer and inner surfaces of said side; also having screw-threaded shanks b 1), extending down below and through the box-bottom B and bottom bar,O. The legs a a are united by rivets 0, arranged to pass through both legs and the intervening portion of the boX-side A, thus firmly binding them against the exterior and interior surfaces of said side and holding the parts all firmly together. The outer leg, a, of the strap is made with an offset, d, at a short distance from the bottom of the side A, and which throws the shank b of said leg outward. This construction causes the strap to form an outer brace to the wagon-box side A and bottom bar, 0, and is a great improvement over the single or. straight box-strap. The shanks b b of this strap-brace, which extend through the box-bott0m B and bottom bar, 0, are secured below by nuts 6 e and a washer, f, thus firmly holding the strap-brace to its place, and box-side, boxbottom, and

bottom bar to their places, a nut, 6, also being preferably applied to the screw-threaded shank b above the bottom bar,O.' The offset d likewise provides for the shanks b b to penetrate the bottom bar, 0, at an increased distance apart, thereby not weakening said bar, as would be the case were the shanks arranged closer to one another.
G is the side brace, such as has heretofore been used for carrying the foot-board D. This side brace is connected above with the strapbrace E by a bolt or rivet arranged to pass through both legs of the strap-brace and in tervening portion of the box-side. It is secured below, and the foot-board firmly held to itsplace by forming the lower end portion of said side brace with a shank having a screwthread on it, and applying thereto nuts 9 g, the one being arranged above the foot-board D, and the other below the bottom bar, C, as shown.
The strap-brace E, applied to the inner and outer surfaces of the box-side A, passing over the top thereof and having; its legs riveted together, as described, serves to hold the wooden wagon-box side in a firm straight position, and prevents it from warping or splitting.
Instead of the rivets 0, bolts or other fasteniugs the equivalents of the rivets may be used, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a strap-brace for wagonboxes, consisting of the doublelegged strap-brace E, having its legs a a perforated to receive fastening bolts or screws, and formed at their lower ends into screw-threaded shanks I) b, the leg at being provided with the offset 11, as set forth.
I 2. The combination, with a wagon-box, of the double-legged strap-brace E, having its legs a a perforated and provided with screwt-hreaded shanksb Z), one of which is provided with an offset, (1, the nuts 6 e e", and the screws or bolts 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
