UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. SCHULTZ, OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
INCANDESCENT MANTLLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,240, dated January 9, 1900.
Application filed December 1, 1898. Serial No. 698,015. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES P. SCHULTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtuoket, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Incandescent Mantles, of which the following is a specification.
The incandescent mantles for gas-burners as heretofore constructed are liable to shrink diametrically out of their proper shape in use and to break; and it is the object of my invention to provide suitable stays or supports against such distortion andto strengthen the mantle and also to increase the volume of light produced; and my invention consists in the combination of the external body of the mantle with internal longitudinal partitions, which serve to brace the external body against contraction when employed for lighting purposes and by their incandescence add mate-.
rially to the volume of light given out by the mantle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a gas-burner provided with my improved incandescent mantle. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the mantle. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section taken in the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sections representing modifications in a number of supporting stays or partitions. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section showing a modification. Fig. 7 is a cross section taken in the line 7 7 of Fig. 6.
In the drawings, A represents the Bunsen burner, and B the Wire support for the upper end a of the mantle C, the said mantle being made of the materials heretofore employed and well known in the art. The external body I) of the mantle is made in the usual form, and the internal cavity of the said body is provided with one or more diametrical or radially-arranged longitudinal stays or partitions c, which serve to brace the body I) to its original form when the mantle is in use for lighting purposes and which divide the mantle into two or more longitudinal spaces or fiues, the said stays or partitions 0 being made in any desired number, as illustrated by the modifications shown in Figs. 4 and 5. These partitions may be inserted in any suitable manner and are made shorter at their lower ends than the length of the body b of the mantle, and the said partitions by resting at their lower edges f upon the top 01 of the burner will constitute an additional support to the mantle which may be employed without the wire support B, the downward extension 6 of the body 19 below the lower edge f of p the partitions serving to retain the mantle in position upon the burner A.
The mantle, as shown in Fig. 1, is suspended by means of the transverse loop g, secured at its opposite ends to the upper end h of the body I) of the mantle, as usual; but I prefer to attach the loop g to the partition, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the said loop being preferably attached to the diametrical partition 0 at its center line, with the ends g of the cord or wire of which the loop is formed extending downward along the axis of the partition, thus serving to strengthen the same.
I claim as my invention- 1. An incandescent mantle provided with an incandescent external body, and one or more incandescent diametrically or radially directed longitudinal partitions, adapted to increase the volume of light given out from the mantle, substantially as described.
2. An incandescent mantle provided with an incandescent partition, and with an external body extending below the lower edge of the partition, whereby the mantle may be supported uponthe burner without requiring a support for the upper end of the mantle, substantially as described.
3. An incandescent mantle provided with an internal longitudinal partition, and with a loop attached to the said partition, for suspending the mantle over the burner, substantially as described.
CHARLES P. SCHULTZ.
