Specification of Letters Patent.

application sled March 14, 191s. senai No. 754,173.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN J. JAEGER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Weehawken, county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and quseful Improvements in Metallic- Filament Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in metallic filament lamps and has for its special purpose to produce metallic filament lamps in which a coiled filament of relatively great length is arranged in a small cone-shaped space.
The present metallic filament lamps of metallic filaments arranged between suita le top and bottom supports so that the single sections of the filament are all located mathematically in the mantle cfa tube. As a result of such arrangement the large quantity of light is emitted sidewise while the end glass rim of the solid stem and its supports throw shadows when the lamp hangs downward as usual.
rIhe present invention overcomes the described deficiencies by arranging the filament in a cone-shaped space with the apex.
of the cone near the tip endcf the lamp so that the broadest portion of said cone is near the stem of the lamp adjoining the socket whereby the light surface of the filament throws the light in a downward direction when the lamp hangs downward with its tip end azff usual.
To ease the production of the lamp and economize in labor'. and wages the coneshaped filament has an inner vertical portion which passes centrally through its loops. his innervertical portion of the coneshaped filament is integral with the loops and therefore, rendered incandescent with the same.
In order to render the invention clear, reference is had to the accompanyin drawing in which an incandescent electric lamp with cone-shaped metallic filament is illustrated embodying in desirable form the present improvements the tungsten filament.
are clamped or cemented In the drawing a small lamp is illustrated such as an automobile lamp and the like in, which the filament accordingly is a great deal smaller and therefore self-supporting. The small cone-shaped filament p does not require any anchors but its vertical inner portion p1 passes through the loops as shown and being part of the continuous filament is rendered incandescent during the use of the lamp together with the looped portions of The leads q, 7', accordingly are of even length and end shortly beyond the stem s where the filament ends la thereto in the usuall manner. Thus the inner filament portion 791 acts as a support for the loops of the filament p which greatly simplifies the manufacture of such lamps because no eXtra labor is required for providing supports and anchors. This inner filament portion p1 of the filament p thus performs the function of supporting the filament loops and is renl, dered incandescent therewith.
I claim as my invention 1. A metallic filament lamp comprising an inner stem with leads, and a coiled, metallic filament secured to said leads, and an integral inner supporting portion.. passing through the filament loops and rendered incandescent with said loops.
2. A metallic filament lamp comprising an inner stem with leads, and a coiled, cone# shaped tungsten filament secured to said leads having its apex near the tip end of the lamp, and an integral inner supporting portion passing through the filament loops and rendered incandescent with said loops.
'3. In a metallic filament lamp a coiled, cone shaped metallic filament having its apex near the tip end of the lamp, and an integral inner portion passing through the filament loops and rendered incandescent with said loops durin the use of the lamps.
Signed at' New Yor r, N. Y., this 12th day of March, 1913.
