- limitan STATES PATENT Ormes,
THOMAS WHALEY, OF FLORENCE, COLORADO.
COLLAR-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,057, dated January 9, 1900.
Application filed September 27, 1899. Serial No. 731,812. -(Nomodel.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS WHALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florence, in the county of Fremont and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in covers for collar-buttons, and it relates more specifically to the provision of a b'uttomcover of this character adapted for use upon collar-buttons of ordinary construction which will serve to securely retain thebutton in place in the buttonhole in the shirt-band, preventing the same from dropping out, and thus avoiding the annoyance, which is so common, occasioned by the loss of collar-buttons, which frequently drop from the huttonhole in the shirtband when the collar is removed.
It has heretofore been attempted to provide rubber button-covers for collar-buttons; but owing to the fact that the length of the post or shank of collarbuttons such as are commonly used sufficient space between the baseplate and the head of the button is not provided to accommodate the thickness of the buttonhole edges occasioned by the stitching.
The object of the present invention is to provide a suitable cover for collar-buttons, the cover being made of either rubber or other equivalent material which may be readily applied to the button and which will serve to prevent the button from being accidentally displaced from the buttonhole in the shirtband and which will at the same time serve to firmly retain the button in place when the collar is attached, and also serve to prevent injury or discomfort to the wearer or the tarnishing of the base-plate of the button, resulth ing from contact of the plate with the neck.
I have found that the impracticability of button covers heretofore designed for use upon ordinary collar-buttons has, as stated, been due, mainly, to the fact that the length 'of the post of the button is not sufficiently great to accommodate the stitched edges of the several buttonholes upon the shirt-band and collar and at the same time the additional thickness of the button-cover; and the specific object of my invention is to overcome this defect.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the 6o novel construction of the button-cover, all as hereinafter described, shown in the accolnpa nying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which-J- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collara button with my cover applied thereto. Fig. 7o 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the protecting-cap.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates .a collarbutton of ordinary construction, A representing the head, B the post or shank, and C the base-plate, of the button.
D represents the button-cover, which is preferably made of rubber and is adapted to 8o be stretched over the base-plate C of the button. It will be noted that the portion of the cover which covers the back of the base-plate is thickened, as shown 'at E, thus providing a cushion. The upper face of the cover over the upper face of the base-plate is very thin, being strengthened by ribs F F, one upon each side of the button post or shank, said ribs being a sufficient distance from the post to provide for the additional thickness of ma- 9o terial adjacent to the buttonholes occasioned by the stitching forming the binding of the holes.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by the use of the strengthening-ribs F F it is rendered possible to make the upper face of the cover of exceedingly thin material, and the advantages gained by the provision of the cushioned portion of the cover at the back of the baseplate of the button will be roo at once evident.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
In testimony whereof` I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
