IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED FENGE ANl) GATE.
dire fitigrhule refemh it in' these Ztetters Want amt mating part at figs same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, C. S. S. GRIFFING, of Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula, and State of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful improvements in Combined Fence and Gate, being an improvement on a patent granted to me May 24, 1864; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the construction of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speci fication, in which- Figure 1 is a side .view of the fence and gate.
Figure 2 is a top View of the same.
Figure 3 is a view of the gate when opened.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views.
A, fig. 1, is a section of awfence-panel, and which is constructed of five narrow boards, but a number more or less may be used, as the height of the fence required. These boards are nailed or otherwise fastened to the cleats B, and allowed to project a little beyond them. These panels are supported in position by the angular frame or post 0, fig. 2, which consists of the base-board D, fig. 3, to which are fastened the standards E, and stayed laterally by the braces F. G isthe gate, and is constructed of the same number of bars as the fence. The bars at the head of the gate are made to project beyond the cleat at considerable lengtl1,-as shown in fig. 3, and by which his hung to the fence by inserting the projecting ends between the spaces of the panels. The gate, when closed, is supported by these projecting ends resting upon the boards of the panels, and the Free end is supported by the bottom resting upon the base D of theangular frame or post, while the top is secured by the notch H, fig. embracing the cross-tie I, fig. 1. The position of the gate, when thus closed and secured, is shown in fig. 1. This panel G is opened by simply lifting the free end from the base-board, upon which it rests, and swinging it round to the position shown in fig. 3. As the gate turns it rests upon the base D of the post and the boards of the panel, and when fully opened is prevented from falling by the projecting end of the upper bar, the extreme end of which being provided with a lug, J, fig. 2, which catches against the standard E, and is thereby held in the position as shown in fig. 3.
It will be obvious that this gate is simply a panel of the fence, essentially like the rest, forming the line of fencing, hence is required but little change in its structure to make a gate of any panel, and which can be easily and cheaply done by any person of ordinary intelligence.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The panel G arranged as described and in relation to the panels'A A and braces B, when combined so as to form a gate and panel jointly in the manner and relatively as specified.
C. S. S. GRIFFING.
