UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH T. WARD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FENCE-JoINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,843, dated January 9, 1900. Application iiled Tilly 17, 1899. Serial No.v724,026. (No model.)
`T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. VARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, (Germantowm) in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Fence-Joint, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in joints for fences and similar purposes; and the object of my improvement is to provide means for joining rods or bars together and also for securing the same in a permanent position to supporting-posts.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of the sleeve or coupling mem,- ber. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of same with a part broken away to showinterior construction. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of same, showing rods, post, and rivet in position. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the rivet.
The sleeve or coupling member 6 is in form of a tube with an enlarged central portion 7, having a transverse vertical slot 8 for the reception of the post 16. This opening 8 is preferably larger at its lower side to permit of play of the post, so that when the fence is erected on an inclined surface the post may remain perpendicular even when the bars are not horizontal. The member 6 is also provided with a longitudinal slot 9 through its upper side for the reception of the head and a smaller opening 10 through its diametrically opposite side for the stem of the rivet 11, hereinafter described.
The openings 8, 9, and l0 all extend through the walls of member 6 and com mnnicate with its interior. Upon the inner wallv of the tube is provided the projection or annular collar 13 in line with the lower or smaller aperture 10 and extending to the edges of the longitudinal slot 9, terminating about midway its extension. The purpose of this projection 13 is to limit the inward movement of the rods let and 15 and to maintain them at sufficient distance apart to permit the insertion of the stem of rivet 11.
A T- rivet is used, as shown in Fig. 4, having projections 19 upon the under side of its head, and the rods are provided with dents or recesses 17 and 18 near their abutting ends for the reception of the projections 19 of the rivet.
When the T- rivet is dropped in place after the rods 14 and 15 are inserted in the sleeve as far as they will go, the projections 19 of the rivet engage with recesses 17 and 18 of the rods, while the stern of the rivet projects through aperture 10 of member 6 and is clenched upon the lower side, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the said rods are held securely inl place.
The post`16 passes through the slot 8 and is provided with an aperture 2O to coincide with the longitudinal opening of member 6. The rod 14 is inserted into member 6 through aperture 2O of post 16 and is secured by the rivet, as above described, thereby locking rods and post in one firm joint.
It is obvious that this device may be applied-simply as a rod-coupling as well as a joint for rods and post combined.
What I claim to be my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a longitudinal tube for rods with a projection upon its inner wall between the abutting ends of the rods, and apertures in the opposite sides of the tube for the head and stem respectively of a rivet, a rivet having projections on the under side of its head and rods recessed near their abutting ends to receive said projections, substantially as described.
2. In a fence-joint the combination with post and rods, of a longitudinal tube for the rods with a transverse slot for the post, a projection upon the inner wall of the tube between the abutting ends of the rods, and apertures in the opposite sides of the tube for the head and stem respectively of a rivet, a rivet having projections on the under side of its head and rods recessed'near their abutting ends to receive said projections, substantially as described.
3. In a fencejoint the combination with Witnesses:
JN0. SToKEs ADAMS, MAE HOFFMANN.
