FOLDING BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,818, dated January 9, 1900.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY SCHNACKEN BERG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has reference to improvements in boxes made of paper or similar exible material from a single piece or blank, and has for its object economy in the cutting up of material,compactness for packing in transportation while in the condition of a blank not yet set up in the form of a box, and particularly the formation of a strong and durable box' which can be set up with the greatest facility and in the least time. Heretofore in boxes of this character the body of the box-that is to say, the bottom, side, and.

end ilaps--have been introduced into the boxform from below, thus retarding the operation of inserting the body of the box into the form and rendering the body of the box liable to slip downwardly out of the box-form, due to the weight of the contents when the box is opened. According to my present invention I so construct the blank that the body of the box can be folded or introduced into the boxform from above, thus facilitating the operation of forming a practical box and producing a considerably-stronger box than heretofore in all respects.

The nature of my invention will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in whioh- Figure 1 represents a plan View of the blank from which the box is formed. Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the first step in placing the body of the box within the box-form. Fig. 3 is a plan View of Fig. 2. Fig. 4is an end elevation showing the second step, Fig. 5 a similar view showing the third step, Fig. 6 a sectional elevation showing the fourth step, Fig. 7 a longitudinal section showing the fth step, and Fig. S a transverse section showing the last step, for introducing the body of the box into the box-form. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a completed box. Fig. 10 is a side view ofthe blank,showingthemannerof turning up the gummed tongue. Fig. 11 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale, showing the body of the box partly introduced into the box-4 form.

Similar letters and numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, the letter a designates that portion of the blank which forms the bottom of the box and which is provided with end iaps b b and with side flaps c c. The blank is scored along the lines l l and 2 2 or otherwise formed with such folding-lines that the end iiaps b b can be turned upwardly about the lines l 1 and 2 2 and the side iiaps c c upwardly along the lines 1 2 and 1 2 to form the body of the box. The inner side flap c forms a continuation or extension of the blank of the box-form d, which latter is scored 0r otherwise formed with folding-lines, as at 3 3, 4 4, 5 5, andl 6, so as to permit the blank to be folded into substantially rectangular shape and to form an underlapping tongue e, which is provided with a gummed surface, so as to hold the box-form together in a usual manner. The blank dof the boxform is also provided with a flap forming the cover f, which is scored at 5 6 to enable the cover to be turned down and also at 7 7 at a proper distance from its outer edge to form the front lap g when the portion beyond the score-line is turned downwardly. The blank of the box-form is furthermore provided with end laps h h, which can be turned about the lines 3 8 and 4 5. The score-line 3 4 in line with the score-line 6 3 is the turning-line of the blank forming the body of the box about the upper and outer edge of the box-form. The particular form of the blank is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and need not be more fully described here.

In making up the box the blank is first folded over on the lines 3 3, 4 4, 5 5, and 6 6 to form the rectangular box-form, the tongue e being pasted to the adjacent end of the form, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. This places the, parts in the position best shown in Fig. 2, which represents an end view. The portion of the blank forming the body of the box is then turned downwardly and inwardly about the front edge 3 4 of the box-form, as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 and also in perspective in Fig. 11. The downward movement of the body of the box IOO causes the end liaps b b and the side flaps c c to be turned inwardly, and the body of the box finally takes the position shown in Fig. 6. The end laps h on the box-form are then turned downwardly and inwardly about the lines e 5 and 3 8, as shown in Fig. 7, and then the cover f and its lap g are turned downwardly to the position shown in Fig. S, thus completing the box. The cover and its lap may then be held to the box by means of a suitable ribbon, tape, or cord i in a usual manner.

Before inserting the body of the box into the box-form after the latter has been set up, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the end flaps b b can be turned upwardly and inwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, and the side flap calso turned in the same manner, as shown in Fig. 5, and then the enti re body can be turned from above downwardly into the box-forxn- I do not wish to restrict myself to the particular form or conguration of the blank shown in the drawings, as it is evident that the same will be changed according to the shape of box desired.

It will be readily understood that as the body of the box is provided with four flaps the box-form is reinforced on all four sides, and consequently a strong and durable box not liable to distortion is formed.

Vvihat l claim as new isl. A paper box comprising a form open at top and bottom and provided with a box-body adapted to fold into said form downwardly from above and connected with said box-form along one of the top edges osaid box-form, substantially as described.

2. A paper box comprising aboli-form open at top and bottom and made in substantially rectangular form and provided with a boxbody having a bottom and side and end flaps said box-body being connected with said boxform along one of the top edges of said boxform and adapted to fold downwardly and inwardly into said box-form about said top edge, substantially as described.

3. A paper box comprising a box-form open at top and bottom and made in substantially rectangular form and provided with end laps and a cover, and a box-body having a bottom and side and end flaps and connected with said box-form along one of its top edges and adapted to fold downwardly and inwardly into said box-form about said top edge; said end laps on the box-form being adapted to be turned inwardly and downwardly and said cover to be turned downwardly to close the box, substantially as described.

4. As a new article of manufacture,'the herein-described blank for boxes; the same consisting of a sheet of suitable material, one of the longitudinal edges of which forms the lower edges of the front, rear and end walls of the bottomless box-form, said sheet being provided with a longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edges of said front, rear and end walls of the bottomless box-form,

transverse scores forming the adjacent end edges of said walls and a flap projecting beyond theportion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edges of the front lwall for forming au additional flap and the bottom wall of the box, said first iap being provided with crosswise and longitudinal creases or scores for forming lthe front, rear and end edges of the bottom wall, substantially as and for the purpose described.

5. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described blank for boxes; the same consisting of a sheet of suitable material provided with a longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edges of the front, rear and end walls of the bottoinless box-form, transverse scores forming the adjacent end edges of said walls, and a flap projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edge of the front wall for forming an additional flap and the bottom wall of the box; said iirst iiap being provided with creases or scores for forming the front and rear edges of the bottom wall and being also provided with supplemental aps projecting from the side edges of its central portion, and longitudinal creases or scores at the adjacent ends of the supplemental flaps, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

6. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described blank for boxes; the same consisting of a sheet of suitable material, one of the longitudinal edges of which forms the lower edges of the front, rear and end walls of the box, said sheet being provided with a longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edges of the said front, rear and end walls of the box, transverse scores forming the adjacent end edges of said walls, aiiap projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edge of the front wall for forming the bottom wall of the box; said iiap being provided with crosswise creases or scores for forming the front and rear edges of the bottom wall, and an additional iiap projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edge of the rear wall, said additional flap being provided with a crosswise crease or score for contacting with the top edge of the front wall, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.

7. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described blank for boxes; the same consisting of a sheet of suitable material provided with a longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edges of the front, rear, and end walls of the box, transverse scores forming the adjacent end edges of said walls, a ilap projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edge of the front wall for forming the bottom wall of the box; said iap being provided with crosswise creases or scores for forming the front and rear edges of the bottom wall and being also provided with supplemental flaps pro-v jecting from the side edges of its central por- IOC IIO

tion, and longitudinal creases or scores at the adjacent ends of the supplemental flaps, and an additional flap projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edge of the rear Wall; said additional flap being provided with a crossWise crease or score for contacting with the top edge of the front Wall, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

8. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described blank for boxes; the same consisting of a sheet of suitable material, one of the longitudinal edges of which forms the lower edges of the front, rear and endwvalls of the bottomless box-form; said sheet being provided with a longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edges of said front, rear and end Walls of the box-form, transverse scores forming'the adjacent end edges of said Walls, a flap projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edge of the front Wall for forming an additional flap and the bottom Wall of the box, said first-mentioned flap being provided with crosswise and longitudinal creases or scores for forming the bottom and the front, rear andend edges of the bottom Wall, and flaps projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edges of the end Walls of the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

9. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described blank for boxes; the same consisting of a sheet of suitable material provided With a longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edges of the front, rear, and end Walls of the box, transverse scores forming the adjacent end edges of said Walls, atlap projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edge of the front Wall for forming the bottom Wall of the box; said flap being provided with crosswise creases or scores for forming the front and rear edges of the bottom Wall and being also provided with supplemental flaps projecting from the side edges of its central portion and longitudinal creases or scores at the adjacent ends of the supplemental flaps, an additional ap projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score for forming the upper edge of the rear Wall; said 'additional ap being provided with a cross- Wise crease or score for contacting with the top edge of the front Wall, and iiaps projecting beyond the portion of the longitudinal crease or score forming the upper edges of the end Walls of the box, substantially as and for the purpose described.
