IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-OILING JOURNAL-BOXES.V

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN WHITLOCK, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Oiling Journal-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exa'ct clescription'of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure I represents a section through one of my journal-boxes.
Figure 2 Vrepresents a plan of the inside of the upper half of the box.
Figure 3 represents a section through the two parts or halves of the journal-box, and showing the carryingwheel for bringing up the oil from the well or reservoir, and throwingit over the journals in dotted and sectionah lines.
My invention consists in combining with a shaft or journal that carries a Wheel or distributor or both, and which turns in a tight `journal-box, certain oil passagesV that communicate with the oil reservoir in the box, so that the wheel or distributor shall carry up and How-the oil over the journals, and the excess of oil How back through the passages to the reservoir, to be again carried up, distributed, and return.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to 4the drawings.l o
A B represent respectively the upper and lower halves of the box, which fit together by [langes or lugs, or both, so that they may be bolted together as at a a, and one recessed into the other so as to keep them true.
At about the centre in length of the box there is a deep recess, b, in both the upper and lower halves ofthe box,
in which a disk, wheel, or ring. c, on the axle, journal, or shaft, supported and turning in said box, may turn, and connected with this wheel there may be, on one or both of" its faces, or attached to its perimeter, or otherwise, distrib'utors, f, for carrying the oil thus brought up by the wheel from the reservoir out ou to the shaft,
"journal, or bearing, so as to oil it throughout, o1' nearly so. At the ends of the under halt' of thel journal-box there are openings e, and from these openings e passages lead to the central portieri of said halt, and communicate with the reservoir or recess b, through which openings and passages the excess of oil throvn on to the journal or shaft passes hack to said recess or reservoir to be again carried up, and again distributed over the journal. The passages leading from the ends to the recess or reservoir are closed passages, andv do not in any way interfere with the proper surface-bearing between the box and journal, as slots or grooves would do that are not enclosed or cast in the box, or enclosed by the box, and the frictioual metal bearing, or box-metal in the box, as I propose to do. My box may be used with a doWn-hanger,or on a frame, or in any of the wellknown Ways of using journal-boxes. Openings are made in the upper halt' of the box for supplying the lubricating material, and inthe under halt' for drawing off the oil or lubricator, should it at any time become neces-- sary to do so. I l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a shaft or journal having a wheel, disk, `or ring attached to that portion of it that revolves in the journal-box, and with distributors for carrying the oil over the shaft or journal, the vertical end passages, and horizontal passages leading from said ends back to the recess or reservoir, for the purpose of making aself-'oiling device, substantially as described.
JOHN WHITLOCK.
