IMPROVEMENT IN IIUBRIGATING GAR-WHEELS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.:
Be it -known that I, WILLIAM W. MARTIN, of the city and county of Allegheny, in the State of Penn, eylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricating Car-Wheels and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings` and'to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
vThe nature of my invention consists in providing the interior of a car-wheel with an oilreservoir, which communicates with an oil-chamber in the opening for the axle, said reservoil` and oil-chamber being so constructed and arranged with relation to each other that the oil will be supplied to the axle of the wheel in limited quantities, in the manner hereinafter described.
'Io enable others skilled in thenrt to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification- Figure l is a front elevation of a car-wheel.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same, cut through at line :u of iig. 1, and represents the oilreservoir and its relation to the oil-chamber in theopening for the axle.
Figure 3 represents n. section of the wheel when cut through at line x of iig. 2.
I construct the car-wheel in any ot' the known forms, and by the ordinary means. In the interior of the wheel, near the opening B for the axle, I core out a reservoir, A, for oil, or other lubricating-material. The reservoir A is made in the form represented in the drawings, but may be made in any desired form, but in every case must be provided with a projection, O, extending into the reservoir A, and through this projection must be an opening, 3, communicating between the oiLreservoir A and the oil-chamber n in the opening B for the axle. As the form of the reservoir A and oil-chamber n, and their relation to the opening for the axle, will be readily seen by reference to the accompanying drawings, and as thc means for and the manner of caring out such' reservoir, chamber, or cavity in a. wheel or other casting is a thing we li known and understood by the skillful moulder and mechanic, I will, therefore, without further description ofthe construction of my improvement, proceed to describe its operation, which isas follows:
I iill the reservoir up to about the line I with oil, or other iubrieating-material, by means of an opening leading from the outside ofthe wheel into the reservoir A, as indicated bythe dotted lines 5. After the desired quantity of the lubrieating-material is putin the reservoir, this opening, if so desired, may be closed by a. suitable plug, or other means. New, the revolving of the wheel will cause the lubricatingnnaterial to iiow across the face 5 of the projection O, and therebyr canse a very small portion of the lubricating-material to iiow into the opening 3, and through it into the chamber 1a ofthe opening B for the axle, which will thereby be kept properly lubricated without ioss or waste ofthe lubricatingmiatter. It will be observed that the lubricating-matter will aitcrnately iiow from 'the reservoir A into the chamber 1t, and from chamber et into reservoir A, and will thus, by the revolving oi' the wheel and iiowing of oil from one chamber to the other, give out only the necessary supply of the lubricating-matter to keep the wheei and its axle properiy lubricated.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is The reservoir A, provided with projection O, furnished with an opening, 3, for communicating between the reservoir A, chamber n, and opening B for the axle, the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating euhstantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
