TO ALL WIOM 1T MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, G. M. Mounts, of Cohocs, Albany county, New York, have invented a new and improved Oiling Device for Journal-Boxes; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make' and use the same, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. l
Figure 1 is a cross-Section ef ajournal-box, to which my improved oiling device has been attached, tulcen through the line x a', iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the suine, taken through the line ,fl/y, fig. 1.
Figure f3 isa detail View of the inclined plate.

My invention has for its object to furnish en improved device for oiling journals, which shall be siinple in construction, effective in operation, and easily removed and replaced when worn; and it consists in forming inclined shoulders in the oil reservoir formed in the `journal-box, und in the inclined removable slotted plate, in combination with the inclined shoulders of the journal-box and with the oiling disk; the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the lower, and B the upper part or cap of the journal-box. The middle part of the lower part A isV cut away, or chambered, so ns to form an oil reservoir, C, as shown in Egs. 1 and 2, leaving a rib, a', so that the side of thejournal may be in Contact with a. bearing surface throughout the entire length of the journal-bok. Upon the sides of the reservoir or chamber C arc formed inclined shoulders D, as shown in iig. 1. These shoulders l) may bc cast solid with the journal-homer they may be formed separately and placed-within the chamber C, es may bel desired or convenient. E is a. metal plate of such a length as to extend from the bottom of the chamber Cvto its upper edge, resting upon the inclined shoulders D, and equal in breadth to the breadth of the said chamber C, so that it may fit accurately into its sent. The steadiness of tht,` plate may be increased by making the sidesY of the chamber-C and the edges ofthe plate lilslightly tapering, or wedge-shaped, as shown in figs. 2 and 'lhe plateE is slotted longitudinally, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3, for the reception of the oiling disk F. the 'ournuls G of which revolve u on the face of the said late E, as shown in fins. 1 and The lower .l P P a edge ofthe plate E is notched, and the lower end of the slot through said plate is enlarged, as shown in figs. 2 and 3, to allow the oil to have a, free passage. By this construction the plate E prevents the shoulders D from becoming worn by thejournalsyG; and should the plate D become worn it may be turned over or rem'oved Vand replaced with o new one, without interfering with the operation of the journal, und while the said journal is in motion. It also enables a large or small oiling disk, F, to be' used, as may be desired or convenienty I claim' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t 1. Forming inclined shoulders Din the oil chamber or reservoir C of the journal-box, substantially :1s herein shown and described und for the purpose set forth. Y
2. The inclined removable slotted plate E, in combination with the inclined shoulders D of the journal-box und with the oiling disk F, substantially as herein shown and .described and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 28th day of January, 1867.
G. M. MORRIS.
