ALBERT JAUMGARTEN, OF FREEPOR'I, ILLINOIS.
TOWEL-HOLDER.
SPEOIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent no. 640,357, dated January 2, 1900. Application filed January 3, 1899 serial No.700,887. (No model.)
Zo (ti Z whom 21;; may concern:
Be it known that l, ALBERT BAUMGARTEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Towel- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in towel-holders, the purpose of which is to produce a cheap, ornamental, and effective holder which may be easily put together and taken apart and shall hold one or more towels securely and yet permit of their withdrawal either together or separately, as may be desired.
The invention consists in certain novel characteristics, which will appear from the description of the preferred device and which will be particularly defined in the claims.
The drawings show a front elevation in Figure 1, a vertical section in line 2 2 of Fig. 1 in Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the outer plate in Fig. 3, a front elevation of the inner plate in Fig. 4:, a perspective of the post in Fig. 5, and a section in line 0 6 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow 6, to illustrate the effect upon one part of the device by the operation of another part, in Fig. 6.
A is a supporting post or stud, which may be provided with a screw a to attach it to a convenient object. This post is provided with a shank a, at the outer end of which project three shoulders a beyond which the post is reduced into a neck a surmounted by a three-cornered head a It will be understood, of course, that the number of corners of the head or shoulders on the shank are immaterial to certain portions of my invention, the description being made in exact terms for clearness, but without any thought of limiting the invention to any of these specific forms. A coiled spring B encircles the shank of the post, and a tilting plate 0 is provided with a three-cornered opening 0, large enough to pass over the shoulders of, enabling the plate to rest upon the spring. The plate is provided with three projecting buttons 0, adapted to be inwardly pressed by the finger or by the towel to open the jaws of the holder From these buttons extend inwardly three ribs 0 adapted to engage with the cap or cover in the operation of the holder. Said cap or cover is shown in front view in Fig. 1 at D and in rear view in Fig. 3. It has a central triangular opening (1, adapted to pass over the head a and by a partial rotation to engage therewith, as seen in Fig. 1, to hold the parts together. The back or" the cap is provided with three grooves d, fitted to the ribs 0 and adapted by engagement therewith to prevent rotation of the cap during the ordinary use of the device.
In putting the holder together the coiled spring B is placed upon the post, the tilting plate G passed over the same and forced down upon the spring, and the cap D then passed over the head a and rotated partly around until the grooves cl receive the ribs 0 To operate the holder, any one of the three jaws is opened by pressing inward upon the correspondingbutton 0, either with the hand, the towel, or other article, and then slipping the latter in between one of the ribs c and one of the grooves d. Fig. 6 shows that the oscillation of the tilting plate by means of one of the buttons does not disturb the engagcment between the ribs which correspond to the other buttons and the cap, so that either one of the three jaws may be used independently and without regard to anything which may be supported by the other jaws.
I recognize the possibility of great variation in the form and construction of this device, and hence do not believe the invention to be limited to that specifically described herein.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination with a post provided with means for securing it to a relatively stationary object, of two plates supported upon the post, one substantially rigid with respect thereto and one adapted to be tilted or tipped with respect to the same and a spring bearin g upon the post and the tilting plate to bring said tilting plate toward the fixed plate; substantially as described.
2. The combination with asupporting-post, of a spring encircling the post, a tilting plate encircling the post, resting upon the spring and having radially-projecting buttons and outwardly-projccting ribs and a cap secured.
post and be engaged therewith against longitudinal movement by a partial rotation, said cap being adapted to cooperate with the tilting plate to clasp the desired articles between the two; substantially as described.
4. The combination with a suitable post, of an outwardly-spring-pressed tilting plate encircling the post and provided with three substantially equidistant radial ribs, and a 'cap secured upon the endof the post and provided with three inwardly facing grooves adapted to receive the ribs; substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 28th day of December, A. D. 1898.
