Uiv'rrn LEMUEL L. IOlVELL, OF ELKTON, VIRGINIA.
UOWIBINED BICYCLE-LOCK AND WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,221, dated January 1900- Application filed January 28, 1899. Serial No. 703,712. (No model.)
features assembled in the most convenient and compact manner.
With this object in view the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the various parts and in their novel combination and arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this speci fication, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device adjusted for use as a screw-driver. Fig. 2 is aviewshowingthe cap-plate removed to disclose the mechanism for locking the screw-driverin position. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the face-plate.
In carrying out my invention I employ a stationary or fixed jaw A, which is integral with the shank l3, and sliding upon said shank is the movable jaw 0, held in any adjusted position by means of the jam-nut D, which works upon the threaded portion D of the shank B. By means of the movable or sliding jaw arranged in this manner I am enabled to quickly and easily adjust the said jaw in any desired distance in order to operate upon any ordinary-sized nut.
In order to provide a lock for the bicycle and also a screw-driver for any use desired, I attach a rod G to the lower end of the sliding jaw, which rod works in a groove G, out near the lower end of the fixed jaw, the forward end of the rod being sharpened, as shown at G to provide a screw-driver, and adjacent to the forward end a notch G is cut in the said rod, which notch is adapted to be engaged by a spring-actuated bolt H, sliding in a recess H, cut in the face of the stationary jaw, the spring H being located in a still deeper re cess above the recess H. The spring-actuated bolt has a lug H which is engaged by the bit of a key for the purpose of raising the bolt and disengaging the screw-driver G and permitting the movable jaw to be slid back.
A face-plate I is screwed upon the recessed and grooved face of the fixed jaw for the purpose of covering the locking-bolt and actuating-spring, and secured to said face-plate is a key-bearing I and the wards 1 it being of course understood that these parts may be varied or changed as desired without departing from the broad principles of the invention, the idea being to derive a suitable means for releasing the bolt H whenever it is desired.
In order to accommodate the key bearing and wards, a mortise H is cut in the face of the fixed jaw, said mortise opening into a recess or groove II, so that the key as it revolves can come into contact with the lug H I have shown and described the various parts which go to make up a combination wrench, bicycle-lock, and screw-driver. In order to provide a lock for securing the bicycle, I employ a chain K, which is fastened at one end to the handle F and carries an eye K at the opposite end, through which the screwdriver G is adapted to pass, the lower portion of the movable jaw being cut away in order to permit the screw-driver to be passed through the said eye between the movable and fixed jaws, as most clearly shown in Fig. 1, it being of course understood that the chain is first passed around the wheel or driving-gear of the bicycle before the end is secured.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly simple and compact combination device capable of performing all of the objects and functions for which it was intended.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a tool of the kind described the combination with a shank, a fixed jaw on the end of said shank, and a movable jaw on the shank, of a rod or pin carried by the movable jaw and extending transversely through the fixed jaw, and means for engaging said rod or pin and holding the jaws in a locked position, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the fixed and movable jaws, the shank and handle, of a rod or pin secured to the movable jaw and project 10 bination with the fixed and movable jaws, of
the rod or pin carried by the movable jaw and projecting through the fixed jaw, a spring actnated bolt having a lug adapted for engaging with a key and the face-plate carrying a key-bearing, substantially as described.
