UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. HORN AND JAMES QUINN, JR., OF DENVER, COLORADO; SAID QUINN ASSIGNOR TO SAID HORN.
COUPON CH ECK-ENVELOP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 639,983, dated December 26, 1899.
.Application filed December 22,1898. Serial No. 700,059. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it 72mg concern.-
Be it known that we, JOSEPH L. HORN and JAMES QUINN, J r., citizens of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Coupon Check-Envelop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention relates to a class of envelops designed to be used by banks and financial institutions for transmitting coupons. They are made of a good grade of heavy paper or any suitable material.
The objects of our invention are to provide an envelop about the size of an ordinary bank check or draft, which facilitates the handling of same among other items, one that provides space for a complete record on the face, the bank endorsements to be made on the back the same as on an ordinary check or draft.
We refer now to the drawings in further explaining the nature and objects of our invention, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the face of our invention having the end flap extended as it appears before sealing. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of our invention with the envelop or pouch open to receive coupons. Fig. 3 is a view of the paper or material as cut preparatory to manufacturing the envelop.
A is the portion of the paper or other material used in manufacturing the invention which forms the face of the envelop.
A is the end flap of the envelop.
The dotted line B indicates the position the end flap occupies when sealed.
A is one of the side flaps, which is folded in manufacturing to the dotted-line position indicated by B in Fig. 3.
A is the side flap on the opposite side of the out form, Fig. 3, and is folded in manu= factoring so as to lap over the edge of thefiap A as indicated by the dotted lines 13 in Fig. 3, when the two are glued or otherwise secured together.
The side flaps A and A are provided with triangular ends A and A which when folded and glued to the extension end Oof the main portion A form the V-shaped reinforcement A, as indicated by the dotted lines B in the several figures. This reinforcement gives the extension end 0 about the same strength as the part of the main portion A where the envelop or pouch is formed. This means provides the requisite length and obviates the necessity of having a long envelop or pouch, as they are not practical, owing to the inconvenience of removing the coupons. It also eliminates the necessity of attaching a counfer-check or piece of paper to a small envelop, as is sometimes done by banks and financial institutions in handling coupons in the general business way.
We do not confine ourselves to any one manner of manufacturing our new envelop, but desire to cover the principle involved and vary the way of making it to suit the purposes for which it is designed.
Having thus described the nature and ob jects of our invention, with the manner of constructing the same, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
In a coupon check-envelop of the class described, comprising an extension end, the pouch or sack, having the side flaps extending out, glued to the extension end and designed to stiifen said extension, for the uses and purposes herein set forth and substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we hereunto subscribe our names in the presence of two witnesses.
